Math Camp should be designed to help new students cover the gap that they have towards math requirements for the AgEcon major. If old students want to participate as a review, it should be encouraged but they should not be the center of the discussion all of the time. In the last math camp, another of the biggest issues occurred when students didn’t had the solutions of the exercises made in class prior to the homework assignments in order to succeed answering the questions proposed. Also after homework assignments students didn’t had solutions for the problems proposed. Challenges are necessary and should be encouraged helping to evaluate how students are or will be prepared for their programs, but should not be a constant throughout the math camp. 2009.03.11 17:48:23 74.140.204.32 http%3A//www.uky.edu/Ag/AgEcon/surveys/mathcamp.html 2007 4 4 4 4 3 4 4 4 3 4 4 4 4 4 3 ___ ___ 2009.03.11 17:54:30 74.131.43.221 http%3A//www.uky.edu/Ag/AgEcon/surveys/mathcamp.html 2008 3 2 3 3 2 3 3 3 2 3 2 2 2 2 1 ___ More class handouts. It got me into a mathematical thought process. However I also recall that the instruction was more algorithmic -focusing on how to do an operation -than conceptual -focusing on why the operation worked. This resulted in being able to do the operation once someone else pointed out it was the correct response, but not being able to intuit what problems called for what solutions. ___ It has been too long to remember specifics. I recall that the course had helpful moments and boring moments for me, but not which. I remember that I used some of the the coursework material later -I think linear approximation. Generally, my impression was that it was not as useful as I had expected, but by no means an unhelpful course. ___ 2009.03.12 11:34:20 74.131.114.182 http%3A//www.uky.edu/Ag/AgEcon/surveys/mathcamp.html 2005 Generally, calculus thru differential equations and linear alegebra is expected for incoming students. Also, students who do not have a strong math background should probably take a couple of calculus classes before trying to sit through Math Camp ___ In general, you need to do more examples in class. I understand that time is in short supply, but I do not think that all students are gaining a whole lot from this. I think it is better to cover 45% of the material with a 85% understanding of the students then to cover 100% of material planned with only a 20% understanding by the students.
