Albert L. Lederer joined the University of Kentucky faculty in 1994 as Professor of MIS and Ashland Oil Research Fellow. In 1999 he was named Philip Morris Endowed Professor of MIS. He holds a PhD in Industrial and Systems Engineering from the Ohio State University, an MS in Computer and Information Sciences from Ohio State, and a BA in Psychology from the University of Cincinnati. He has taught courses in management information systems, management of information resources, electronic commerce, systems analysis and design, operations management, and accounting information systems primarily to MBA candidates but also at the undergraduate and doctoral levels at Ohio State, the University of Pittsburgh, Oakland University, and UK.Prof. Lederer
Before becoming a professor in 1983, Dr. Lederer had spent over ten years in industry in the MIS field. He had consulted or worked full-time developing systems or managing others who did so for a variety of firms including Abbott Labs, Rockwell International, Procter and Gamble, Dresser Industries, O.M. Scott, Bank One, BancOhio, and many smaller ones. As professor of MIS, he uses those industry experiences - as well as more recent ones with ALCOA, USX, Barclays Bank, Blue Cross, Federated Investors, General Nutrition Corp., Miles, Haworth, Pittston, and other firms - as much as his formal education in both his teaching and his research.
In his research, he attempts to explain how companies can more effectively plan their use of information technology to help them compete. He has investigated numerous firms with surveys, structured interviews, group techniques, and case studies. As a result, his articles have appeared in research and practitioner journals such as the MIS Quarterly, Communications of the ACM, Journal of Management Information Systems, Sloan Management Review, Information Systems Research, Decision Sciences, Datamation, COMPUTERWORLD, Information and Management, Journal of Information Systems Management, Journal of Systems Management, Business Horizons, Data Management, Information Strategy: The Executive's Journal, Information Management Review, Interfaces, Business Forum, Personnel, Personnel Administrator, Computer Personnel, Journal of Information Technology, Journal of Management Systems, Interface: The Computer Education Quarterly, Long Range Planning, Journal of Strategic Information Systems, Journal of Business Strategy Academy of Management Executive, Journal of Information Technology Management, DATA BASE and several other periodicals.
Hence, a study of top journal articles reported in "An Examination of Articles in the Eight Leading Management Information Systems Journals: 1980-1988" in Socio-Economic Planning Sciences in 1991 identified him as being the 29th best published U.S. researchers in the field. A study entitled "An Evaluation of Research Productivity in Academic IT" in the March 2000 Communications of the Association for Information Systems further found that of the 1,223 authors with articles on management information systems research in ten top journals in the field between 1992 and 1996, Prof. Lederer ranked 21st best published. Finally, "An Analysis of Research in Information Systems (1981-1997)" in Information and Management in 2000 (37, 4) examined the authorship of 1,121 articles in two long established, top journals, the MIS Quarterly and Information and Management . It identified him as tied for fourteenth best published MIS researcher in the MIS Quarterly , seventh in Information and Management , and as fourth in a composite of the two journals during the time period.
In addition, he edited the Handbook of Human Resource Information Systems for Warren, Gorham and Lamont, New York, in 1991 as well as supplements to it in 1992 and 1993. He is editorial review board member of the Journal of Management Information Systems, Journal of Strategic Information Systems, Journal of Information and Technology Management, Journal of End User Computing, and Journal of Information Systems Education. He was previously senior editor of the Journal of Information Technology Management as well as associate editor for the Journal of Database Administration and Decision Sciences.
He is a member of the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM), Association for Information Systems (AIS), INFORMS, Decision Sciences Institute, Computer Professionals for Social Responsibility, Association of Management, and Information Resources Management Association.
