COURSE DESCRIPTION

• A comprehensive study of the basic organizational structure, processes, and techniques involved in theatre design, technology, and management with particular reference to UK Theatre.

LEARNING OUTCOMES

• By the end of the semester the student should:

1. Understand the elements and principles of design as they pertain to theatrical design.
2. Understand the importance of and ability to do research in the theatrical design process.
3. Understand the areas of theatrical design and technology.
4. Be able to analyze the design and production elements of a theatrical production.

GRADING

Grades are calculated on a point system:

• Final grades are calculated by points accumulated and divided by the points possible to determine percentage. Grades for the course and the class are assigned based on percentages as follows:

  100-92% = A (represents exceptionally high achievement as a result of aptitude, effort, and intellectual initiative)

  91-83% = B (represents a high achievement as a result of ability and effort)

  82-74% = C (represents satisfactory acheivement)

  73-65% = D (represents unsatisfactory achievement and is the minimum grade for which credit is given)

  64-0% = E ( represents unsatisfactory achievement and indicates failure to acheive the objectives of the assignment or course)

MATERIALS

• TEXT: J. Michaal Gillette, Theatrical Design and Production, 4th edition.
• Students are expected to purchase theatre tickets and supplies necessary to complete assigned projects. I expect you to have these items in class when needed. Specific items you need immediately include: a drawing pad, pencils, black ballpoint pen. You should bring these items to class everyday.  

CLASS ATTENDANCE POLICY

• This is a course that requires participation. Attendance is necessary as well as mandatory and absences will count against your grade. The following attendance policy pertains to this class.

  3 - 5 unexcused absences Final Grade will drop one letter.

6 unexcused absences You fail the course.

• If you provide appropriate documentation, you may receive an excused absence which will not count against your grade in any way. This means a note from your doctor for illness, death notice for a death in the family, and formal notification for university excused absences. Students missing due to an excused absence must notify me within one week following the period of the absence. For additional information regarding these policies, please refer to the current University Bulletin.
• Any student needing to miss for religious observances must notify me in writing no later than one week before you plan to miss.
• TARDINESS: Students not in the classroom by the time roll is complete will be counted absent unless a compelling reason can be documented.

LATE POLICY

• Assignments, which are turned in late, will be docked one letter grade and after three days, you receive a failing grade for that assignment.
