Topics for paper on The Calling of Katie Makanya

Write a short (2-3 pp double-spaced) essay on one of the following topics. Be sure to support your argument with specific information from the book:

1. Compare Katie Makanya’s encounter with European civilization with that of Olaudah Equiano. In what ways were their experiences similar? In what ways did they differ? Which of these differences are due to the fact that Equiano was male and Makanya female? Which differences reflect the fact that Equiano had been taken way from Africa, whereas Makanya stayed there? Which differences reflect the changes between Equiano’s lifetime (second half of the 18^th century) and Makanya’s (late 19^th-early 20^th century)?

2. What are the major changes that European colonialism brought about in African society, as they are depicted in this book? What was gained and what was lost in this process?
