What follows are a number of examples of texts, journal articles, and data sources on tourism (see also References section in texts). Readings (books) on two-hour reserve are marked with an asterisk (*) and can be found at the W.T. Young Library circulation desk (or, in the case of some journal articles, on-line). Many articles, of course, can be accessed through the University of Kentucky Libraries' Electronic Journals Database. Most of the books and journal articles listed are by geographers, but not all.

*Mowforth, Martin and Ian Munt. Tourism and Sustainability: New Tourism in the Third World (London and New York: Routledge, 1998). The book, the primary text for this course, promotes an understanding of new forms of tourism within an analytical framework premised upon systems of power with particular attention paid to the discourse and practice of sustainability and globalisation. The central argument is that the uneven and unequal dependencies and development between First World and Third World countries are reflected in unequal exchanges encountered through tourism. The book seeks to question the degree to which new forms of tourism are capable of overcoming the well-documented economic, socio-cultural, and environmental problems with conventional mass tourism, and result in benefits for 'host' countries; a claim promoted by most forms of new tourism. The aim of the first part of the book (chapters 2-4) is to present an analytical framework for reading and analyzing new forms of tourism. The second part elaborates this conceptual discussion, through an analysis of the practices and discourses of the major actors in tourism (tourists, the industry, governments and so on).
