Fall Newsletter
Volume 8, Issue 1 - October, 2001
From Your President,
Dr. Hayden Brown:
The new school year is in full swing. I hope this edition of the National Newsletter
finds things going well both academically and "activity wise" on your campus.
In most chapters, fall is the time of year in which excellent monthly meetings
are held, chapter activities are highlighted, new members are recruited, and
plans are made to attend the National Convention. Let me encourage each chapter
to participate in the Block and Bridle awards that are supported at the National
level. You may refer to the web page for details and deadlines. I am mentioning
these awards now in an attempt to get you to record your yearly activities as
you go, so that the chapter activity report and chapter abstract will be easily
prepared near the end of the school year. I would also encourage the smaller
schools, including junior colleges, to participate in these awards. Please read
the information in this newsletter carefully, so that your chapter is well informed
about the activities at the national level (Hint: you might also want to plan
meetings with the scrapbooks and other competitions in mind!)
The 82nd Annual National Block and Bridle Convention is coming up fast. The convention is being held in conjunction with the North American International Livestock Exposition in Louisville, KY. Convention dates are November 8, 9, 10, and 11. The University of Kentucky is hosting the convention. The University of Kentucky chapter with advisor Dr. Fred Thrift has completed the planning for this event, which promises to have something of interest for all. Registration materials have been mailed to all clubs, and they may also be printed from the national B&B website (www.asas.org/bandb/). Completed registrations forms and checks made payable to National B&B Convention should be mailed to the University of Kentucky Block and Bridle Club by October 15, 2001. Please check this website for more details about the 82nd Annual National Convention.
I am pleased to report to you that the Collegiate Livestock Leaders Institute (CLLI) held last summer in Indianapolis and Denver was a big success. Dr. Nevil Speer did an outstanding job of coordinating the CLLI for 2001. We can't say enough about the overwhelming support, financial and otherwise, of the National Cattlemen's Beef Association and the American Society of Animal Science for this important Block and Bridle activity. We also would like to express our appreciation to the universities and colleges that had students involved in this activity, because they provided additional financial support. If I listed them all, I am sure that I would miss someone, but I would specifically like to mention the efforts of Dr. Nevil Speer, Dr. Ellen Bergfeld, and Renee Lloyd.
I have appointed a committee to revisit all requirements with regard to the National Scrapbook competition. The committee consists of Dr. Tim Marshall, Chairman, Dr. Debra Aaron, and Dr. Jodi Sterle. They are planning to report at the business meeting at the National Convention in Louisville.
Finally, thanks to the other members of the executive committee for their willingness to help with leadership at the national level.
- Hayden
The University of Kentucky has hosted the National Block
& Bridle Convention many times. The past Block & Bridle conventions
in Louisville have been excellent, and we can look forward to another fantastic
trip! Please note that this is an alcohol-free trip as outlined by our hosts,
the University of Kentucky.
Please note that everyone needs to be dressed and ready
to go to the required events early on Saturday and Sunday mornings.
The tours on Friday are optional; see the schedule (available on the B&B
website) for more details. Below is a brief summary of what we are looking forward
to.
IMPORTANT NOTE: All chapters must have a faculty advisor with them in order to attend the convention.
Thursday, November 8
Friday, November 9
Saturday, November 10
Sunday, November 11
More information about the North American International Livestock Exposition can be found on the web at: www.livestockexpo.org/
This convention is a professional event, and it is hoped that everyone will make us proud to have them as part of the convention.
Advisors, there is a sample release form that you may choose to have your students sign prior to the trip (see B&B website). Please also be sure that all convention attendees are members of the National Block & Bridle association; dues are only $10 for lifetime membership. The membership form and instructions are available on the B&B website.
We'll see you in Kentucky!
First and foremost, please ensure
that all members of your club who are attending the National Convention
are members of the National Block & Bridle Club. It is very inexpensive
(only $10 for lifetime membership!), and members are provided with an official
certificate.
The new member form
can be printed from the Block & Bridle web page (see top of page 1 for web
address), or you can type the information on a separate sheet of paper. Be sure
the paper includes the following:
1. Mailing date
2. Name of your club (Block & Bridle Club? Saddle & Sirloin Club? Animal Science Club?)
3. Name of your college or university
4. Date members were inducted into your club
5. Your advisor's name and complete mailing address (where certificates will be sent)
6. A list of the new members, typed alphabetically with the last name first (please also number each one)
7. Total amount enclosed ($10 x number of new members); make checks payable to National Block & Bridle Club
8. Advisor's signature
The information you provide is the
information that will appear on the certificates.

Collegiate Livestock Leaders Institute: Beef Class 2001
Block and Bridle, in cooperation with the American Society of Animal Science (ASAS) and the National Cattlemen's Beef Association (NCBA), sponsored another successful Beef Class of the Collegiate Livestock Leaders Institute. Participants in this year's class were T.J. Barclay (West Texas A&M University), Rene Brewer (Cal Poly-San Luis Obispo), Nicole Harris (Kansas State University) Carol Hicks (University of Georgia), Nate Jaeger (Texas A&M University), Natalie Lamneck (University of Florida), Kristina Seybold (University of Minnesota) Lori Thompson (University of Missouri), Nick Thompson (Michigan State University) and Scott Updike (Virginia Tech).
These ten students participated in various sessions at the Federation of Animal Science Societies (FASS) meetings in Indianapolis. A week later the program resumed in Denver where students had the opportunity to interact with industry leaders and facilitate NCBA's Summer Conference. Applications for Collegiate Livestock Leaders Institute Beef Class 2002 need to be postmarked by October 25; nominees will be selected and announcements will be made at the annual Block and Bridle Convention in Louisville. This is a wonderful opportunity for students. One student commented after this year's experience: "I recommend this program to anyone who wants to make the beef industry a career!" Any further questions about the program should be directed to Dr. Nevil Speer at Western Kentucky University (Nevil.Speer@wku.edu).
