Fall Newsletter
Volume 5, Issue 1 - October, 1998
From Your President,
Dr. Ronnie Green:
Dear B&B'ers:
I hope that your campus is now back in full swing for the new school year and that your local club is looking forward to an exciting year. I know that things are hopping on our campus! We have also been busy over the past several months on the National B&B scene.
One of the most exciting things underway at the moment is the development of
a new "Livestock Leaders Institute" for undergraduate students.
We have developed a proposal for such a program for the beef cattle, swine,
dairy, poultry and equine industries. The idea is that ten students for each
species from around the U.S. would be selected annually to participate in a
three phase program. Phase I would be a "leadership college"
experience in conjunction with the commodity organization (e.g., National Cattlemen's
Beef Association, National Pork Producers Council, etc.). The second
phase would be a required internship with an industry organization
or company, and Phase III would be a leadership symposium for
all of the species participants together at the annual meetings of the scientific
societies (American Society of Animal Science, American Dairy Science Association,
Poultry Science Association). This would be a competitive program in that all
member schools would be allowed to nominate one member per species per year.
We would then select the top ten students nationally for each year's class.
These students would then receive scholarship support to cover all of their
costs associated with the program. We are excited about this developing program.
The idea has received favorable response from several of the key stakeholders
already. We hope to have the final specifics in place for discussion and consideration
by the membership at our national convention in Fort Worth! This would allow
us to get started with students for the first class in the 1999-2000 school
year. More on this later, but start thinking about it for your local club.
Our Fort Worth convention is coming up
fast. Our hosts at Tarleton State and Texas
A&M are working hard to make sure we have
a great 79th meeting on January 27-31, 1999.
You should already have received registration
materials. More information on the convention
is in this newsletter and can be found on the
National B&B web page (see web address at
the top of this newsletter). Hope to see a big
delegation from your school there!
I know that I speak on behalf of my fellow
national officers when I say that we are
humbled and honored to serve you in any way
we can. If we can help, let us know. We're
looking forward to seeing many of you in Fort
Worth. We'll have lots more to tell you there.
Have a great fall semester in your part of the
world. Thanks for all that you do for B&B on
your campus.
Best Wishes,
Ronnie D. Green, Ph.D.
National President
