Fall Newsletter
Volume 6, Issue 1 - November, 1999

From Your President,
Dr. Ronnie Green:

I hope this edition of our national newsletter finds things going really well on your campus with the new school year now in full swing. Fall is an important time for most Block and Bridle chapters in terms of new member recruitment and national convention planning, so hopefully yours is turning out to be a good one. Read the information in this newsletter carefully so that your chapter is well informed about the "goings on" at the national level.

The 80th Annual National Block and Bridle Convention is coming up fast. The event is being hosted by the University of Georgia chapter and will be held in Atlanta in late March. The Georgia group, with advisor Dr. Julia McCann, has completed most of the planning for the event and it promises to be a great time for all. This is the first time our national convention has been held in Atlanta and is the continuation of a new trend we started several years ago. Look for the details about the convention in this newsletter and on the national web-page. We also are working with the University of Missouri on their plans for the 81st national convention which will be held under the arch in St. Louis in 2001, another first-time convention site!

I am pleased to report to you that we have received formal approval for our first year of the Collegiate Livestock Leaders Institute. The American Society of Animal Science and the National Cattlemen's Beef Association are partnering with national B&B to stage the first year of this effort. The program consists of two modules for the participating students. One module will be held during the Mid-Year Meeting of the National Cattlemen's Beef Association in Denver, Colorado August 2-5, 2000. The other module will be at the American Society of Animal Science/American Dairy Science Association joint meeting in Baltimore, MD July 24-28. We are in the process of preparing a mailout packet that will be sent to all heads of animal science departments and B&B advisors at each of our local affiliate institutions. We plan to have that information out by mid November. The packet will include a full description of the program, the process for the selection of the 2000 Class of the Collegiate Livestock Leaders Institute, and our plans for broadening the effort to other species and commodity groups in future years (2000 will be for beef cattle only with plans to begin similar programs in the equine and swine areas in 2001). A total of ten students will be selected for the honor of being in this first class, with all expenses covered as a "travel scholarship". Keep abreast of this program through your department head and/or B&B advisor. We are really excited about this new area for the national B&B organization.

I also need to clarify one further point about the Collegiate Livestock Leaders Institute. Recently, your club advisors received a notice from Renee Lloyd at the National Cattlemen's Beef Association informing them that the student Cattlemen's College that had been planned for the 2000 Annual Meeting of NCBA in Phoenix, AZ had been canceled. THIS IS NOT THE SAME PROGRAM AS THE COLLEGIATE LIVESTOCK LEADERS INSTITUTE. The student Cattlemen's College effort was being planned as an additional partnership effort between NCBA and national B&B, along with several others. Unfortunately, the funding necessary to stage the event did not come together for this year. However, please do not confuse this and the Collegiate Livestock Leaders Institute, they are completely separate entities.

Lastly, make sure you are aware of all of the deadlines for various submissions to the national organization. We really would like to have all chapters send in their new member rosters and an annual chapter abstract each school year. These are all very worthwhile pieces of the picture at the national level, so the more missing pieces, the less clear the picture! Please check the national web page to see if your chapter's abstract for 1998-99 is there. If not, please send one in to national editor Dr. Jeannette Moore. Thanks for getting those in on a timely basis.

I feel very honored to serve as your national president with such an outstanding group of officers and advisors. Let us know if any of us can help you in any way. Best wishes for a great rest of the school year!

- Ronnie Green

80th National Block & Bridle Convention
March 23-25, 2000 in Atlanta, Georgia

Convention 2000 - Southern Style Comes to Atlanta.....

The National Block and Bridle Convention will convene March 23-25, 2000 at the Crown Plaza Hotel in Atlanta, GA for a full schedule of activities. The convention will kick off with a reception at the Crown Plaza Hotel on Thursday evening and be entertained by Doc Holiday, a well known hypnotist for his humor and spell binding show! A dance at the Crown Plaza will wind up the evening to make sure everyone has an opportunity to mix and mingle a little before a full day of tours on Friday.

The Georgia Block and Bridle Club is pleased to offer two exciting tours on Friday, March 24. One tour will visit Buckhead Beef, the largest purveyor of Certified Angus Beef in the US. The group will also visit Three Trees Ranch in Sharpsburg, GA, one of the premier cattle facilities and herds of Angus and Charolais in the United States. Chapel Farm Arabians, a 200 acre farm in Newnan will share their nationally known breeding and showing operation headlined by the stallions Chances Are (Polish/Russian), Abraxas Halimaar, Hadaya El Tareef (Egyptian bred) and five other stallions.

A second tour will visit C. L. Cook's Angus Farm, a well known supporter and producer of top performing bulls on test and a gracious host at his beautiful farm in Covington. Dupree Farms has owned and promoted several world champion American Saddlebreds. A variety of outstanding individuals among many different breeds will be showcased in their beautiful indoor facility. Williams Dairy, voted the outstanding dairy in Georgia is excited about the group visiting their operation. Carol and Everett Williams are graduates of the UGA Block and Bridle Club and will share their excellent management methods with the group.

Both tours will convene in Madison, GA for a tour through an antebellum home, the Cultural Center renovated from a historic school house, and possibly a walk to a Civil War graveyard or shopping in the quaint downtown of Madison. Madison was just too beautiful for Sherman to burn on his march to the sea and we are proud to showcase this beautiful small town full of many southern mansions.

Dinner is planned on the UGA campus at one of the premier university physical activity centers in the country. Appropriately called the SPACE Center, the GA County Agents Association will host a GA Farmhouse dinner in the volleyball court, complete with many GA grown products. Entertainment and a short drive back to Atlanta will conclude the day.

A slate of speakers are being confirmed for the activities on Saturday with the theme Agriculture: An Industry, A Profession and a Passion. Along with special leadership breakfast and workshop for scrapbooks and yearbooks, there will be a session that addresses all the livestock species during the morning program. Confirmed speakers include Glenn Smith of AgInfoLink, Laura Meadows of USDA Rural Development and Government, Dr. Lee Myers of the GA Department of Agriculture, Kim Anderson, Coordinator of the GA FFA Program, and Dr. Steve Stice, endowed chair of the animal bovine reproductive physiology at UGA and responsible for the only bovine cloning to date. The afternoon schedule was left open for touring the local sites readily available to MARTA, the public transportation system. Tourist information will be available for the CNN Studio, Coca Cola Museum, Fernbank Museum, Turner Stadium, and other sites will be available upon arrival in Atlanta. Saturday will conclude with a banquet to highlight honors among the clubs and their members while enjoying the "Gone With the Wind" buffet dinner.

Registration for the convention will cost $160.00 which includes the reception, all tour costs, Friday meals, and the Saturday evening banquet. REGISTRATION IS DUE JANUARY 24, 2000 AND SHOULD BE SENT TO: Becca Martin 897 So. Milledge Avenue Athens, GA 30605

Hotel reservations should be made by each individual school at the Crown Plaza Hotel, 770-395-7700 with the convention rate of $99.00/night plus 12% tax (total of @111.00/room). They will take reservations at this rate until March 2, 2000 but all schools are encouraged to make their arrangements as soon as possible. We know there is a smaller convention at the same time in this hotel and we want everyone to have the positive, unified experience of staying in this quality hotel.

A Convention 2000 - Southern Style web site is being prepared and can be accessed from the Block & Bridle web pages at www.asas.org/bandb/. Check the site for more specific details on speakers and times of the events as they are confirmed. The UGA Block and Bridle Club is excited to host the convention and hopes to see you there!

Local Block & Bridle Club Checklist

First and foremost, please ensure that all members of your club who are attending the National Convention are members of the National Block & Bridle Club. It is very inexpensive (only $10 for lifetime membership!), and members are provided with an official certificate.

The new member form can be printed from the Block & Bridle web page (see top of page 1 for web address), or you can type the information on a separate sheet of paper. Be sure the paper includes the following:

1. Mailing date

2. Name of your club (Block & Bridle Club? Saddle & Sirloin Club? Animal Science Club?)

3. Name of your college or university

4. Date members were inducted into your club

5. Your advisor's name and complete mailing address (where certificates will be sent)

6. A list of the new members, typed alphabetically with the last name first (please also number each one)

7. Total amount enclosed ($10 x number of new members); make checks payable to National Block & Bridle Club

8. Advisor's signature

The information you provide is the information that will appear on the certificates.

Mail the information to:
Dr. Harold Harpster, National B&B Secretary/Treasurer
Department of Dairy & Animal Science
Pennsylvania State University
350 Ag Science & Industry Building
University Park, PA 16802

Other things to do:

Have someone make notes at all of your events so it will be easy to put together your Chapter Activities Report at the end of the year. There is no official "Chapter Activity Form," but all the required information is listed on the Block & Bridle web pages. The categories for the Chapter Activities Report include: Education/Leadership Activities (25 pts), Service Activities (25 pts), Fund Raising Activities (25 pts), Social Activities (15 pts), and Other Activities (10 pts).

It is also a good idea to have someone take pictures at all events so you can make a Chapter Scrapbook to bring to the National Convention for judging. If your club creates a Chapter Yearbook, the pictures will be very helpful for it as well. Again, all the information necessary for scrapbook and yearbook competitions can be found on the web page.

While you are checking out the Block & Bridle web pages, be sure your club has a Chapter Abstract published for the 1998/99 academic year. If your abstract is not there, it is not too late! Simply e-mail the information to Jeannette_Moore@ncsu.edu (must have two N's in the first name) and I will get it on the web within days.

Also ensure that the list of clubs on the web page includes your advisors for this year. If it does not, please e-mail a list of your advisor(s), including their address, phone number, fax number, and e-mail address to Jeannette_Moore@ncsu.edu.

Thank you!
