From Your President,
Harold Harpster:

Nothing in the world can take place of persistence. Talent will not; nothing is more common than unsuccessful men with talent. Genius will not; unrewarded genius is almost a proverb. Education will not; the world is full of educated derelicts. Persistence and determination alone are omnipotent.

Calvin Coolidge

Spring is always a time of renewal for those with strong ties to agriculture and I hope this finds all of you renewing your efforts to strengthen your local Block and Bridle Chapters! I consider it an honor to serve as your national president for the next two years. It will certainly be tough filling the shoes of our immediate Post President, Dr. Hayden Brown. Thanks again Hayden, for your many years of service and dedication to Block and Bridle!

I would be remiss if I didn’t thank the entire University of Kentucky group for hosting another great convention in Louisville last November. If one University has gone far "above and beyond the call of duty" in service to our national organization it would have to be Kentucky given the number of years they have hosted the event. As usual, every detail was well planned and carried out. Congratulations also to Dr. Fred Thrift, who received a well-earned "Special Service" award. We also want to congratulate our newest affiliate chapter North Central Texas College Block and Bridle of Gainesville, Texas. They were unanimously approved as a new affiliate chapter by the voting delegates at the Louisville Convention.

The Collegiate Livestock Leaders Institute program continues to grow and prosper and offer ten students per year an outstanding opportunity to learn more about the beef industry. Originally conceived by former president Dr. Ronnie Green, the program is now ably managed by our National Editor Dr. Nevil Speer. The ten finalists this year include: Samantha Cunningham, Texas Tech University; Jennifer Flinchbaugh, Penn State University; Landon Gates, Colorado State University; Sandra Gruber, Ohio State University; Beth Mink, Virginia Tech; Erin Morrow, Texas A&M; David Newsom, Western Kentucky; Mark Perrier, Kansas State; Laura Unrue, Cal Poly; and Joel York, Illinois State. Congratulations to all those who applied and best wishes to the winners for an outstanding experience this summer. It is hoped that at some point in the future the program can be expanded to include other animal species.

We are always extremely proud of the applications we receive for the various awards that are sponsored at the national level. Nonetheless, we know there are many deserving chapters and individuals that fail to submit application materials. Since most of our deadlines fall in June and July after students have left campus it’s important to plan now to compete for these awards. A complete description of all awards including requirements, due dates, and contact individuals may be found at our club web site http://www.blockandbridle.org/yearly.htm and is also included in this newsletter.

Although it may seem like a long way into the future, start planning now to attend our next national convention in Washington, D.C., January 23-26, 2003. Dr. Cindy Wood and the VPI Club members are at work planning a fun and educational activity. Again, keep checking the web site for updates as plans progress.

All of the national officers wish you a successful spring semester. To those graduating seniors we offer best wishes in your future endeavors.

Finally, we welcome all ideas for making Block and Bridle a better and more relevant organization that meets your needs as students with an interest in animal agriculture. Everyone has good ideas so don’t be bashful in sharing your thoughts with the national officers!

82nd National Block & Bridle Convention
November 8 - 11, 2002 in Louisville, Kentucky

The 2001 National Block and Bridle Club Convention was held in Louisville, KY, November 8-11, 2001, in conjunction with the North American International Livestock Exposition. On Friday, the group toured Clay Charolais Farm, the Kentucky Horse Park and one of two Thoroughbred Farms, Gainesway or Calumet. Friday evening was spent on a dinner cruise after which the group danced to the wee hours of the morning. On Saturday morning, the group gathered at the Expo Center and listened to presentations by Dr. Todd Thrift, University of Florida, Dr. Glenn Dolezal, Excel Corporation, Dr. Don Applegate, Morehead State University and Shannon Wolfram, Man'O'War Farm. During Saturday afternoon, most of the group helped the economy of Kentucky by visiting Churchill Downs, home of the Kentucky Derby. During Saturday evening, the group attended a rodeo at the Expo Center and again danced to the wee hours of the morning. On Sunday morning, the group met back at the Expo Center for a buffet breakfast, entertainment by Dennis Gaines, San Antonio, Texas, and the annual awards presentations. There were 575 attendees representing 45 schools at the Convention.

The Block and Bridle Club Emblem

This symbol is very significant to club members, as it represents the principles on which our club is built. Character, sincerity and a moral life are asked of members when they are initiated into the club and are depicted in the straight perpendicular of the "B". The distinct curves of the "B" are symbolic of social pleasure, mental energy, and the determination of members.

The meat block represents the material aspects of our life and our profession. The bridle stands for the behavior of the B & B members, the control over ourselves that we try to maintain, the mannerisms and respect we show toward others, and the manner with which we treat animals.
