Spring Newsletter
Volume 12, Issue 1 - March, 2005

From Your President,
Jeannette Moore, Ph.D.:

"...the sine qua non of a leader [lies] not in his chesslike grasp of issues and the options they portend, not in his style of management, not in his skill at processing information, but in his having character, the heart, to deal spontaneously, honorably, and candidly with people, perplexities, and principles."

Vice Admiral James Stockdale

‘Thoughts of a Philosophical Fighter Pilot’

I hope this spring newsletter finds your chapter having a great semester filled with fun and educational club activities!

The 85th National Block and Bridle Convention in Denver was a huge success, and I would like to thank Colorado State for planning and hosting the convention, and the University of Wyoming for helping with the planning and hosting. I'm sure everyone who attended would agree with me that the convention was fantastic, and we are very appreciative of the efforts that went into the convention.

I am already looking forward to the 86th Convention, which will be held in Columbus, Ohio on October 20 to 23, 2005. The convention will be in conjunction with the Quarter Horse Congress, and there will be tours to beef and other agricultural enterprises. Please submit your registration materials before you leave for the summer; the forms will be posted by mid-March on the website. You can get to the convention website from our national webpage at: www.blockandbridle.org

The 87th convention will be in Orlando, Florida in January of 2007. Beyond that, the conventions have not been officially declared, but there will be a bid presented for the 88th convention to be held in Kansas City (in conjunction with the American Royal) for Fall of 2007. This is one of the items the two delegates from your chapter will be voting on at the next convention (along with officer elections), so be sure to have your delegates attend the business meeting at the convention in October 2005.

As you finish up this academic year, be sure to get all of your chapter’s award applications, updates on officers and advisors, and chapter abstracts in before you leave your campus for the summer. The deadlines for all of these items is June 15th, and you can read the guidelines and criteria on the Block & Bridle web page.

If there is anything that any of your national officers can do to assist you, please do not hesitate to ask. Our contact information is on the B&B webpage, and we are happy to help whenever we can.

Note to Advisors: If you are going to the American Society of Animal Science meeting this summer, please plan to attend the Block & Bridle Advisors' meeting. Please check the ASAS registration form for time and day.

See you soon!

Food for Thought

One of the features of the 2005 National Convention was a presentation by Mr. Jim Tunney; he was very insightful and entertaining. He left us with some enduring principles that all of us can take to heart. The underlying theme of his talk: "It's the Will, Not the Skill."

  • Leadership is not so much about ability as it is responsibility.
  • Stop being offended so easily.

  • How do you deal with negative people? Run!

  • If you change the way you look at things, the things you look at change.

  • You can get everything you want in life if you just help others get what they want.

  • People don't care how much you know until they know how much you care.

  • Do the right thing!

  • TEAM = Together Everyone Accomplishes More
  • No doubt, some important concepts to ponder on.
