Spring Newsletter
Volume 5, Issue 2 - April, 1999
From Your President,
Dr. Ronnie Green:
I hope this spring newsletter finds your chapter having a great semester filled with a lot of fun and educational Block and Bridle activities. The National Block and Bridle Club is taking the leading role in developing a new Collegiate Livestock Leaders Institute (CLLI). This program is being formulated as a joint effort of Block and Bridle, the scientific societies which are part of the Federated Animal Science Societies (ASAS = American Society of Animal Science, ADSA = American Dairy Science Association and PSA = the Poultry Science Association), and several industry commodity organizations (National Cattlemen's Beef Association, National Pork Producers Council, etc.). The CLLI will be a three-part program. Students will be accepted by an application process. Each school will be allowed to nominate one student for each of the represented industries; beef, pork, equine, dairy and poultry. The top ten applicants will be selected to participate in each species group. The successful candidates will then participate in: 1) a leadership program at the annual convention of that commodity group (e.g., NCBA Annual Convention); 2) an internship with a staffer/leader within that organization while at the convention; and 3) a leadership forum at the respective scientific society meeting for that commodity (ASAS, ADSA, PSA). Selected students would receive a full scholarship to cover their complete expenses for the program. We have assigned working committees to develop the framework for the CLLI within each species. These committees are shown below. These committees are submitting working proposals to the National Block and Bridle officers by April 15th. The officers will then finalize the overall proposal for approval this summer by the partner organizations. We hope to have the bricks and mortar all laid so that we can begin the program with the calendar year 2000, so keep your ears open as we release more details. Advisors will receive more information on the CLLI at the summer ASAS Block and Bridle Advisor's Luncheon (scheduled for Wednesday, July 21st at the Westin Hotel; see back page).
