Questions for Discussion
- What are the functions of the A and B subunits of the A-B toxins? Which subunit is responsible for host cell specificity? Which is responsible for the toxin's effect? What is the most common mechanism of action of these toxins?
- Both spore-forming toxins and phospholipases disrupt membranes. How do their modes of action differ? Give examples of each.
- How do superantigens (e.g. toxic shock toxin) and endotoxin differ from each other? How are they similar?
- Discuss the mechanisms responsible for diarrhea
- Discuss similarities and differences in defense mechanisms by a host for infection and intoxication.
