Garland R. Dever, Jr.
Garland Dever, a native of Lebanon, Ky., joined the Kentucky Geological Survey on July 1, 1963 and retired from the Survey in June, 2001. His field notes and the information gathered in his research into limestone and industrial minerals is considered an invaluable asset to KGS and to Kentucky. His fellow employees appreciated and admired both his geology knowledge and his warm personality and humor.
At least 68 Survey publications bear his name. For years after his retirement, Garland came to the Survey to continue his work, take classes on the UK campus, and occasionally give seminars to KGS staff on his travels around the world. Those at KGS who knew him will miss him immensely. The archival photos below show him in the field with other KGS researchers, taking field notes, and mingling with friends at KGS gatherings.
Visitation for Garland will be at Kerr Brothers Funeral Home, 463 E. Main Street, Lexington, Ky., on Sunday, May 22, 3:00 to 5:00pm. There will be a funeral Mass at the Catholic Newman Center, 320 Rose Ln., on the University of Kentucky campus, Monday, May 23, at 12:10 p. m., with a grave side service to follow.
