New online tool monitors oil and gas permitting in Kentucky

Are you interested in the oil and gas production trends in Kentucky? The new online Permitted Oil and Gas Timeline Query Tool at the website of the Kentucky Geological Survey can help you do just that. The tool, located at http://kgs.uky.edu/kgsmap/ogpermits, displays oil and gas wells permitted in the state since January 2010 along with available information about each well.

The page includes a histogram that indicates the number of oil and gas permits issued each month. Passing a cursor over each month’s bar shows the total number of permits issued that month.
The tool was developed by Liz Adams, of the KGS Geoscience Information Section. "The tool displays only wells that have actually been drilled; if they were terminated or cancelled, they aren’t in the data set," Adams says.

A map in the middle of the page displays various types of oil and gas wells, indicated by icons. You can zoom into the map or move it around to find an icon for a location or specific well. "Clicking on an icon provides basic information about the particular well and a link to more information," says Adams. "The link will go to the KGS database of well documents for that particular operation; it may include formation tops, production data, and core sample descriptions, if they are available."

KGS is the official repository of oil and gas drilling records for the state. When the Kentucky Division of Oil and Gas provides records of permitted operations to KGS, they are made available through the Survey’s online database. As soon as new records are scanned and placed online, the well location and its records become available to view through the Permitted Oil and Gas Timeline Query.

The website includes instructions on using the tool and a query to search for wells by type or the geologic formation at the well’s total depth.

"I designed the tool for industry and general public users alike who wanted to know more about the oil and gas trends in Kentucky," Adams says.
