EES 130 Dinosaurs and Disasters: Absences and contacting Dr. Greb

Absences:

I do not take attendance during class, but don’t think that this means that you need not attend class. In class I give hints as to what will be on exams. I also give out homework. If you do not attend class you will not get these hints or your homework assignment. This will hurt your chance for a good grade. If for any reason you know you will be missing a class, you should email or call Dr. Greb or the TA with the reason for your absence in advance. If advance notice is not possible, then you are expected to email or call the morning after the absence to explain the reason for your absence. If the absence is legitimate, then you will be given the assignment. If not, you will not be given the assignment. You have 1 week to make up a missed assignment unless otherwise worked out with Dr. Greb.

In the week following the exam, I hand back exams, and go over them with you in class. If you are not there to go over the exams, you won’t understand what and why you missed any of the questions you did. Also, if there was some type of technical problem (computer grading errors, etc.) it might be able to be fixed in the week following the exam, but can be difficult to confirm or fix later in the semester. I keep track of who picked up their exams, homeworks, etc., and who did not. This is a proxy for attendance. At the end of the semester, if you have a borderline grade, it will help to have attended class, and it will not help you to have multiple unexcused absences.

Homework Absences and Late Homework:

If for any reason you are not able to attend a class and miss the announcement of a homework assignment, it is your responsibility to get the assignment from a classmate. If you know you will be missing class on the day the assignment is due, it is your responsibility to hand in the homework before class. You can email the homework to Dr. Greb or the TA. If you do not get confirmation that the email was received it is your responsibility to contact Dr. Greb or the TA to make sure the email got through. If you would prefer to hand in a hard copy you can put a copy of the homework in my office mailbox (2nd floor of Mining and Mineral Resources Building: doors open 8 am-430 pm). When handing in hard copies of late homework to my mailbox or the TA’s mailbox, email or call us to make sure we look in our mailbox and receive the assignment.

We will have in-class activities on most lecture days. Some will be in the last part of class, others will be earlier during the lectures. Some of these activities will be the basis for homework assignments. These activities are not in the class notes or on the class website. If you do not have a pre-arranged excuse on a day with an in-class assignment, you will not be allowed to make up that assignment

Exam Absences:
If for any reason you are unable to take an exam on time, you need to contact Dr. Greb or the TA. If the absence can be predicted in advance, you are expected to call Dr. Greb in advance. If the absence is not planned, you must contact Dr. Greb the day after the exam and give a reason for the absence. If you do not contact Dr. Greb by 4:00 pm the next day, a failing grade will be assigned for that assignment or exam. If sick, a note from your doctor is needed. If Dr. Greb is not available, you must try to contact the TA. Do not rely on e-mail as a confirmation that your message has gotten through. Please make the effort to confirm your message is received. For legitimate absences, students will be expected to make time in their schedules to make up the exam as soon as is possible and no more than 1 week after the exam (by Friday, on the same week as the exam, if possible). Even though makeup exams are different then the exams given in class, I cannot review the regular tests in class if students have not made up their exams, so please, if you have legitimate reasons to miss an exam, make up the exam within a week’s time. Failure to follow these guidelines will result in a failing grade for the exam unless other accommodations are worked out with Dr. Greb.

E-Mailing or Calling Dr. Greb:
If you need to email me please be sure to include your name and EES 130 in the message line. I get 25-50 emails a day, many are SPAM and SPAM filters sometimes misidentify emails. If I see EES 130 in the message line I won’t accidentally delete your message. Please do not consider a sent email the same thing as talking to me. I will reply if I receive your message. If I do not reply back within 24 hours, I probably did not receive the message or I am out of town. If you do not receive a reply from me, and it is something urgent, contact the TA with your message.

I do not give out grades by phone or email, so if you miss class and want your grade on a homework or exam, make an appointment with me or the TA.
