EES 130 Dinosaurs and Disasters: Introduction and Objectives
EES 130 Dinosaurs and Disasters
Objectives:
This course is designed to give you a better understanding about earth history, with emphasis on prehistoric creatures (especially dinosaurs), natural global disasters, and mass extinctions. Background principles including geologic time, vertebrate evolution, and fossils will be summarized and integrated into discussions about dinosaurs and extinctions. Along the way, you should gain a better understanding about how science works, and how our planet has changed through time if you can make it through two and a half hours of lecture on a Monday night.
Readings:
There is no text book for this class. There is a web reference list that includes back-up materials in case you miss a lecture, or you need to look up material following (or in advance?) of a lecture topic. I also place easy-to-read magazine articles (National Geographic, Discover, etc.) on reserve in the Science library if you want additional information about specific lecture topics. Again, these are not required reading.
Science Library:
The Science library is located in the MI King Library-Addition (see map). Call to confirm hours at 257-5730.
Course Notes:
Copies of Dr. Greb’s classroom notes will be available at Johnny Print on Limestone, and will also be kept on reserve in the Science Library. They are available the first day of this class. The notes are not required but may be helpful as they will contain most of the powerpoint slides used in lecture. They do not contain all of the material presented in class, so don’t get upset when new slides are shown! Also, some notes may be skipped in a given semester so as to concentrate on new material or emphasize something else. Again, please don’t get upset. Class notes should not be treated as a substitute for attending class. They are provided to help you clarify your lecture notes, if you want them. Notes in the library will not be allowed to leave the library, but can be copied in the library.
Web Info:
The class web page can be found under courses at the Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences (Geology) web site. The url is:
http://www.uky.edu/KGS/education/gly130/
To help you in class and with homework, I have assembled a set of selected web addresses concerning each major topic, which can be accessed through the course web page at Earth History Web Links.
The class does not have a book, but the material on these web pages can be used as a back up or to check material presented in lecture. The material is not required reading unless specifically pointed out in class, but is made available to help you understand topics discussed in lecture, if needed.
Lectures:
This class meets Monday evenings from 5:30-8:00pm. Please turn off cell phones, or put on lowest settings. No cell phones are allowed out on exam days.
You are responsible for material presented in lecture. Lectures will consist of me talking, showing slides, using programs off the internet, and showing videos. Parts of the BBC’s Walking with Dinosaurs, and other videos will be integrated with the course. The videos are not available in the library if you miss class. Students will be asked to participate in discussions of lecture topics. Please participate. Your understanding of subjects can only be increased by participation (it also makes the two and a half hours go by faster). Students are encouraged to ask questions during and after lectures. Dr. Greb will be available for 10 minutes after each lecture to answer any questions, or students can schedule consultations during posted office hours. There will be in-class activities throughout the semester to help you learn about various lecture topics. You must be in class or have an excused absence to make-up an in-class activity. In class activities are not in the class notes.
I do not give out grades by phone or email, so if you miss class and want your grade on a homework or exam, make an appointment with me or the TA.
Final Exam:
The final exam is scheduled for Dec. 15, 2014
. Same as normal class, just that it will be the final.
Classroom Behavior and Decorum:
Students with Disabilities:
If you have a documented disability that requires academic accommodations, please see Dr. Greb as soon as possible during scheduled office hours or after class. In order to receive accommodations in GLY130, you must provide Dr. Greb with a Letter of Accommodation from the Disability Resource Center (Room 2, Alumni Gym, 257-2754, jkarnes@email.uky.edu) for coordination of campus disability services available to students with disabilities.
