Kentucky Oil and Gas Production Data by Well

Contact: Carrie Pulliam

Monthly oil and gas production data by well are now available on the web through the Kentucky Geological Survey oil and gas well search pages. When you search for wells (you can limit by wells with production data under the "Included Data" selections), look for the Production Data link. If there is no link, no production data have been associated with the selected well. The data are reformatted from the monthly oil and gas production data available as Excel workbooks by year from the Kentucky Division of Oil and Gas.

From the KGS oil and gas well search page, you can also download all the production data for all the wells in a result page. After you return search results, click on "Download Results" and click on either "Download Oil Production Data" or "Download Gas Production Data" to download all the production data for wells on the current page of results (the number in parentheses indicates the number of wells with production data on that page of results). If the download "times out" (hangs up or incomplete), try reducing the amount of records on the current page of results.

In general, monthly production data by well begins with the 1997 report year. Some operators voluntarily reported historic data for select wells prior to 1997. No additional data beyond what is provided through the KGS or Division web sites available. It may be that a producing well completed prior to 1997 was shut-in in 1997 and continued in a shut-in status for one or more years. These reports are usually included with a 0 volume and a "SI" status.

In most cases, production data are provided for all 12 months in a report year. For example, if a well first began producing in August of a particular year, a value of 0 is reported for the first seven months of the year.

Where oil or gas production are reported on a lease basis and that lease has more than one producing well, the total production has been allocated equally to each of the wells. That is, if a lease has 3 producing wells and is reported to have made 90 barrels in the month, each well is assigned 30 barrels. This is a convention adopted by the Division of Oil and Gas. No exact allocation (one producing and two shut-in wells, for the example) is available.

Data Key for Oil and Gas Production by Well
Data Item Description
Record_number KGS unique serial well identification number
DOGPermit Permit as it appears in the Division of Oil and Gas data base.
Basis Basis for how data in the KGS and Division databases were matched.

Key to values of Basis
LOC&API Wells were matched on the basis of GIS well location match and the match was verified with the available API number.
LOC&FARM Wells were matched on the basis of GIS well location match and the match was verified with the farm/lease name.
None At this time, there is no match between the KGS and Division data bases. Production data that have not been matched with KGS data are not available through the KGS web site at this time.
PERMIT Wells were matched on the basis of the permit as it appears in the KGS and Division data bases.
LOC&API Wells were matched on the basis of location data using GIS tools.
Year Year of report.
Month Month of report, 1=January to 12=December.
OilAmount Numeric amount of reported oil production in barrels.
OilStatus Producing or shut-in status of the well.

Key to values of OilStatus
NA Producing status is not available (also null or blank value).
PR Well is identified as producing.
SI Well is identified as shut-in (not producing, but not abandoned).
OilCode Data processing code used to identify multiple data reports.

Key to values of OilCode
D Duplicate monthly production was reported by the same purchaser, only one entry retained.
M Multiple monthly production values were reported by the same purchaser, but the amounts differ. The report is assumed to be "supplemental" and individual monthly production values are summed. Only the total is reported.
MR Multiple purchasers reported different production for the same month. All values were kept and flagged. If one purchaser reported all zeros for the entire year, that zero data was deleted.
NA No data were reported. This value usually indicates a well producing either oil or gas and not both. Thus, if a well produces oil only, the gas values are 0 and flagged "NA".
OK The monthly production data value is as reported with no duplicates or multiple reports detected.
GasAmount Numeric amount of reported natural gas production in thousand cubic feet (Mcf).
GasStatus Producing or shut-in status of the well.

Key to values of GasStatus
NA Producing status is not available (also null or blank value).
PR Well is identified as producing.
SI Well is identified as shut-in (not producing, but not abandoned).
GasCode Data processing code used to identify multiple data reports.

Key to values of GasCode
D Duplicate monthly production was reported by the same purchaser, only one entry retained.

NA No data were reported. This value usually indicates a well producing either oil or gas and not both. Thus, if a well produces gas only, the oil values are 0 and flagged "NA".
OK The monthly production data value is as reported with no duplicates or multiple reports detected.
