8.3 Magnitude Earthquake on November 15, 2006 near the Kuril Islands
A great earthquake occurred 495 km (305 miles) SSW of Severo-Kuril'sk, Kuril Islands, Russia and 1665 km (1030 miles) NE of Tokyo, Japan at 6:14 AM EDT, Nov 15, 2006. Several earthquake aftershocks have occurred subsequent to this event. It has been reported that a small tsunami was generated as a result of the earthquake. There has been no damage reported.
These earthquakes were recorded on instruments in the Kentucky Seismic and Strong Motion Network, operated jointly by the Kentucky Geological Survey and the Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences at the University of Kentucky.
