LEXINGTON, Ky. (April 22, 2005) -- For the eighth year, the annual University of Kentucky Sports Marketing Academy will explore the concepts of marketing of sports and marketing through sports in a sophisticated, yet down-to-earth forum to be held May 9-12 on UK’s campus.

The academy, which offers professional certification to attendees in a three-year intensive program, is presented through a partnership between UK’s Center for Sports Marketing within the Gatton College of Business and Economics, UK Athletics, and Host Communications.

“We've been pleased with the success of the academy,” said Scott Kelley, director of the UKSMA and the Center for Sports Marketing at UK. Kelley, who is a professor of marketing in the Gatton College, added, “Our participants come from all over the country to learn from practitioners and researchers who are at the top of their profession. And, since we keep the academy to no more than 100 registrants, the natural give and take provides for a wonderful exchange of ideas.”

The academy attracts sports marketing professionals, athletic directors, and assistant athletic directors from companies, colleges, and even high schools. They attend sessions focusing on everything from how sports teams can market and license mascots and logos, to how companies can partner with sports teams to attract fans as customers.

“UK Athletics is proud to continue its partnership with the UK Sports Marketing Academy,” said Mitch Barnhart, athletics director at UK. “The caliber of presenters and attendees at the academy is always top-flight.”

Host Communications CEO and President Tom Stultz was equally enthusiastic when talking about the UKSMA’s 2005 edition. “In the growing and ever-evolving world of sports marketing, it is essential that professionals come together to share insights and learn from one another.”
