LEXINGTON, Ky. (April 22, 2005) -- A team of University of Kentucky students traveled to Ball State University in Muncie, Ind., recently to compete in the eighth annual Enterprise Creation Competition. The UK team, which presented its business Vision-Résumé, an online interactive employment site, walked away with the Most Innovative Concept award. Of the 23 universities from all over the country vying for a spot in the competition, nine, including the UK team, were invited to attend the final round.

The Enterprise Creation Competition is the premier national competition for undergraduate students designed to educate them about the entrepreneurial process. The experience better prepares students to address the issues of scrutinizing their business strategy and raising capital. The competition is co-sponsored by Ball State University, Indiana University, and Syracuse University.

The UK team first developed Vision-Résumé 16 months ago to meet a need for more interactive employment Web sites. In the future, the company hopes to partner with larger job sites and community job posting sites, in order to offer a Vision-Résumé submission option for job seekers. The Vision-Résumé team also is collaborating with recruitment and placement firms to provide more jobs for its customers.

UK team members are John Williamson, Nicholas Solon, John Harbison, and Michael Porter. Team sponsor Dean Harvey, director of the UK Von Allmen Center for Entrepreneurship, said, “These guys gave a great effort and hit a home run with their presentation.”

William son, president of Vision-Résumé, knows what it takes to compete against top competition. “After competing at the national level, we have gained a new-found confidence in our product and our company,” he said.

“Competing in national business plan competitions is one of the new opportunities we have created for our students. It is a focus of our entrepreneurship program at UK. We are proud of the Vision-Résumé team and were pleased to sponsor their participation in this competition,” said D. Sudharshan, dean of the Gatton College of Business and Economics.

The official launch of the Web site is May 1, and the team will recruit paid summer interns to help with the development of the site.

“We’re looking for bright students who are interested in taking our site to the next level. The positions have the possibility of turning into full-time jobs at the end of the summer,” said Williamson.
