The Master of Arts Program in Orientation and Mobility (O&M) prepares individuals to provide instruction related to knowledge and skills for independent travel for children and adults with visual impairments. These learning and instructional topics include:

  • Use of canes, dog guides, and adaptive mobility devices
  • GPS and assistive technology
  • Advanced travel for complex environments.

The graduate program addresses a critical shortage of qualified O&M specialists throughout Kentucky and nationally. Professionals in O&M are often employed in school districts, rehabilitation agencies, and Veterans Administration (VA) Hospitals. 

Designed to be flexible and responsive to your learning needs:

  • Hybrid, part-time program
  • Evening courses online
  • Select face-to-face weekends
  • One intensive face-to-face summer
  • Internship options at a variety of locations
  • Complete the program in as little as two years

The Master of Arts Program in Orientation and Mobility is approved by the Kentucky Education Professional Standards Board and the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE). The curriculum for this program is aligned to ACVREP standards and competency requirements and will begin pursing AER accreditation.

  2. Personal Statement
    • Please include a 1-2 page biographical statement on why you want to be an orientation and mobility specialist. The paper should be double spaced, 12 point Arial or similar font. 
  3. Three letters of recommendation

Applicants must meet the Graduate School admission requirements.

The GRE is not required for admission to this program.


Application Deadlines:

Fall 2024: March 15

Students will only be admitted for a fall start on even years.
