The Master’s of Science in Medical Sciences (MSMS) is a broad interdisciplinary degree program housed in the College of Medicine. Participating Departments and Centers include Behavioral Sciences; Pharmacology and Nutritional Sciences; Toxicology and Cancer Biology; Microbiology, Immunology and Molecular Genetics; Molecular and Cellular Biochemistry; Neuroscience; and Physiology. The MSMS may be used as a stand-alone degree by students seeking career enhancement in fields such as basic biomedical research, the pharmaceutical industry, or the health science professions; by students seeking academic credentials in the biomedical sciences prior to applying for medical school or other health related professional degree programs; or by students seeking to enhance their knowledge base prior to choosing a career direction.

Master's Program Description

The Medical Sciences program encompasses the disciplines of behavioral science; nutritional sciences; toxicology; microbiology, immunology and molecular genetics; molecular and biomedical pharmacology; molecular and cellular biochemistry; neuroscience and physiology. The student, in cooperation with the major professor/thesis advisor and the student’s Advisory Committee, will determine the elective course work in the area of specialization and in related basic sciences.

Master's (MS) Degree - Application Requirements

    • Include biographical information (name, email, present address, phone number), academic information (current and previous colleges, city/state of colleges attended, dates attended for each college, major in college, overall GPA, GPA in major, degree, year degree conferred, name of college conferring degree), research and work experience (position, employer, location, supervisor, dates of research or work experience).
  2. Personal Statement
    • ​Briefly describe any research experience you have had, list academic honors, including fellowships, publications, etc. List any courses in biology, chemistry, or physics that are not on your transcripts and which you expect to complete before enrolling at the University of Kentucky.
    • In additiona, please answer the following questions in your personal statement:
      1. In one paragraph, describe your educational and career goals for attending graduate school
      2. In one paragraph, describe why you have chosen to apply to this program
      3. If you have already obtained your degree, describe in one paragraph your activities since graduation
      4. Do you consider your academic record is an accurate reflection of your academic potential? If not, please comment.
  3. Beginning Fall 2022, the GRE is not required for admission into this program.
  4. Three letters of recommendation

Applicants must meet the Graduate School admission requirements.
