Military members and their families face unique demands and stresses including repeated, prolonged family separations, frequent family relocation, dislocation from informal support systems, extraordinary physical and psychological risk to the service member, and challenges related to role stress during reintegration of returning service member.  As of 2000, Kentucky had a veteran population of over 336,000 (US Census Bureau, 2012). This certificate provides a specialized curriculum designed to enhance students’ knowledge and skills necessary to provide effective and culturally-sensitive behavioral healthcare services to veteran and military populations, whether these services are provided in military healthcare systems or in community settings.

Students wishing to be enrolled in the Certificate must submit an application to the Certificate Director at least 30 days prior to the beginning of the fall or spring semester for which the student intends to begin related coursework. The advisory board will review applications and inform the applicant of its determination within 30 days of receiving the complete application.

Admission to the certificate is required only for enrollment into SW 738, Independent Work: Military and Veteran Populations. Students may enroll in other related courses whether or not accepted into the certificate.

Acceptance to the Certificate will entail a simple majority vote from the advisory board. All qualified students will be admitted on a first come, first serve basis, until enrollment capacity is met.
