Please join us in celebrating Zac Schmidt as the UK Advising Network's "Top Toot!" honoree for the week of October 19, 2020!
What is your current position, and how long have you been in that role?
I have been an advisor in the College of Nursing for a little over 2 years.
What is your educational and professional background?
I was an advisor at a community college in Colorado before I took on this academic advising role, and was a P.E. and Health Teacher in Arizona for 2 years before I moved to Colorado. I have my Master's in Educational Psychology and am currently obtaining a second Master's here at UK in Biomechanics.
What professional accomplishments are you most proud of?
I would say the PUMA award that is given out to the College of Nursing faculty and staff. I received it after my second year because of my work in our Work-Life Committee.
What do you enjoy most about your current position?
Obviously working with our amazing students! I enjoy seeing them grow and being a resource for them.
Why are you a member of the Advising Network?
I try and stay involved on campus and with other advisors. I honestly don't know that many individuals and this helps me get out of my shell to interact and meet new people.
What is one tip that you have for new (or seasoned!) advisors?
Be resourceful. Talk to your peers, don't be afraid to make phone calls to other departments across campus and be a sponge to absorb as much info as you can.
Do you have any other interesting facts or information about you that you would like for us to highlight?
I love to play sand volleyball and I try to get out and ride my motorcycle as much as I can—which in reality isn't that often unfortunately :(
