Students are required to take an English/Writing test if he/she has​

  • All admitted first-time students with an ACT Reading score 19 and below
  • All admitted first-time students with an SAT Reading score below 24
  • All admitted first-time students with an Unweighted High School GPA below 2.9 cumulative

Effective January 1, 2017 the University of Kentucky has selected the ACCUPLACER testing system to evaluate students’ skills in reading.  Students may choose to take the ACCUPLACER test on UK’s campus or at a pre-approved testing center that is more convenient to the student. A score of 250 on ACCUPLACER Next-Generation Reading demonstrates college readiness in reading.

International students who do not meet the above testing standards are required to complete the ACCUPLACER ESL test. To schedule your placement test, please visit:

Retest Policy

If you aren’t satisfied with your initial score, you may retest once.  We will use your highest score for placement.  Students enrolled in UK 125 are not eligible to take or retake the ACCUPLACER Writing test.
