UK Athletics Supports Appalachian Scholarships
UK Athletics announced it will be providing $500,000 a year to support Appalachian scholarship programs at a press conference this afternoon. The funding was made possible thanks to the recent media contract between ESPN and the Southeastern Conference. With the additional support, UK Athletics now provides $1.7 million in non-athletic, academic scholarships.
Part of the funding will support the current Robinson Scholars Program, which serves first generation college-bound and college students from 29 Eastern Kentucky counties. The remainder of the funding will establish a new scholarship program that will also serve Kentucky students from the Appalachian area.
Kentucky State Senator Robert Stivers and State Representative Rocky Adkins were on campus to help us make the announcement. The two elected officials helped lead an effort last year to provide $1 million each year in state funding to the Robinson Scholars Program.
Today's announcement is a prime example of how UK Athletics is a great partner for the University's education, research, and service missions. Not only is UK Athletics one of only 25 university athletic departments in the nation that generates a profit, it is a national leader in supporting the entire University community.
