Scholarship of Teaching and Learning: Journals, Publishers, and Conferences



The Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (or SoTL) is a growing field of interests, with a number of peer-reviewed journals focusing on the topic. There are two approaches to SoTL: general and discipline-specific. In other words, there are a number of journals devoted the the more general questions of teaching and learning in higher education, and others that are devoted to specific issues around disciple-specific teaching and learning.

These journals are a great outlet for your innovative work in teaching and learning, but they are also invaluable resources for enriching your own teaching practices. This list of SoTL journals, curated by the University of Central Florida, includes a link to research on acceptance rates for submissions to various journals.



The two largest publishers for SoTL are Jossey-Bass and Stylus. Both publisher have an extensive collection of books focusing on teaching and learning in higher education. Many discipline-specific professional organizations also publish books on teaching within the disciplines, such as the Modern Languages Association, the National Council of Teachers of English, and the American Mathematical Society. Finally, a number of university presses are beginning to publish SoTL books.
