A Note From The Office of Nationally Competitive Awards
March 25, 2020
The NCA office consulted with colleagues and scholarship foundations about how this current time away from university campuses and restrictions on activities will affect future scholarship applications. The answer is that everyone knows that all students have been impacted by COVID-19 and that will factor in scholarship reviews. Any gaps on a resume that originally would have included on-campus research or internships or research abroad, etc. will be understood.
That doesn’t mean we should all hang out in our pajamas (well maybe a little!) and watch TV for the next 6 weeks though. Application reviewers will look to see what you did do with the time. How did you use the resources you DO have? We've heard from students who are now caring for grandparents or siblings that cannot get out of the house. Others are finding ways to continue with volunteer service utilizing online resources. Maybe you can start to find resources for a thesis topic or read articles in your disciplinary area that will help when you get back to hands-on research. When the weather gets warmer, maybe you can help out an elderly neighbor by mowing their yard.
Everyone will have different opportunities and resources. Ask yourself, what can you be doing to further your research, learn something new, or help your community within the restrictions of social distancing? Then, carry out that plan.
The Office of Competitive Awards will be holding online appointments with students to talk about award opportunities, preparations and deadlines so please reach out and let’s discuss your specific situation. Please feel free to contact us at the e-mail addresses below to schedule an appointment. We have also compiled video resources (when available) for some of our most common awards here to assist you when researching award opportunities.
Lastly, if you have been offered an award please let us know. We know that many domestic and international summer opportunities have been cancelled, but we still want to celebrate your achievements!
Our best wishes to all of you,
Pat Whitlow, Director, Nationally Competitive Awards (firstname.lastname@example.org)
Emily Sallee, Assistant Director, Nationally Competitive Awards (email@example.com)
