Zoe Hert and Carly Karrick Awarded Explorers Club Youth Activity Fund Rising Explorer Grant

June 25, 2020 - Biology and Lewis Honors College junior Zoe Hert and Biology and Spanish senior Carly Karrick were awarded Explorers Club Youth Activity Fund Rising Explorer Grants.

Carly will travel to Madagascar next summer to collect fecal samples and behavioral data to contribute to an ongoing project regarding endoparasite diversity in wild lemurs. Her travel to Madagascar this summer was postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Zoe, a Chellgren Fellow, will use her grant to fund fieldwork in Ranomafana National Park, Madagascar, researching the microbiome and parasitome of wild lemur species.

Both Carly and Zoe credit Associate Professor of Biology Dr. David Weisrock and Biology Ph.D candidate Mariah Donohue for serving as mentors at UK.

"I love the inquisitive nature of science and the ways that research pushes both myself and the scientific community in general to discover new things," Carly said. "After coming to UK, I really fell in love with the Biology department due to the quality teaching and innumerable research opportunities."
