MLS Celebrates Medical Laboratory Professionals Week

This week, Medical Laboratory Science classes have been even more fun than usual. It's Medical Laboratory Professionals Week, so the MLS faculty and students celebrated.

"We started off the day with breakfast, followed by a student presentation about interesting blood bank case studies," said Michelle Perez-Egana, MLS, (ASCP)CM, and Clinical Lab Science Coordinator.

Then, they played some lab games:

  • Guess the Hematocrit
  • Cells, Cells, Cells
  • Who’s dat baby?
  • Sniff the Diff
  • Pin the flagella on the Trichomonas

When they graduate, these students will be a major addition for the region, which desperately needs more health care professionals across the state, says Bianna Music, Associate Director of the Center of Excellence in Rural Health.

“Do most people know what a Medical Laboratory Scientist is? No,” Music says. “And there are hundreds of jobs across the state begging for MLS professionals to hire.”

In fact, the University of Kentucky has been producing these graduates for 90 years.

“This year marks 90 years that UK has distributed a Medical Laboratory Science degree,” she says. “If people knew about it, then they would want to pursue it, just like I did. This week, we’re celebrating Medical Laboratory Professionals Week, and I want everyone to know the opportunities we have.”
