Philanthropy Spotlight: Emergency funds offer relief for students in crisis

As many of the College’s faculty, staff, and supporters know, students sometimes need a little extra financial help to weather a crisis. To support this need, two funds have been created: the Ethan Earlywine Student Emergency Fund and the UK College of Health Sciences Graduate and Professional Student Relief Fund.

Ethan Earlywine was a UK College of Health Sciences student in clinical leadership management and had the goal in life to help others. He was passionate about healthcare and dedicated to the field in and out of the classroom. While in school, Ethan worked at Georgetown Community Hospital and complemented his academic education with his passion for helping others. To remember his passion for helping others, his family, friends and the University of Kentucky established the Ethan Earlywine Student Emergency Fund to provide financial assistance to students who are facing unforeseen financial emergencies that impact their program progression. Funds are awarded as grants, although students benefiting from this gift are encouraged to share their gratitude by finding philanthropic ways to “pay it forward” in the future. The Fund has been created and awards will be made when it is fully endowed—which is expected in 2023.

The UK College of Health Sciences Graduate and Professional Student Relief Fund supports College graduate and professional students who experience a financial emergency, including, but not limited to, an accident, illness, death of a family member, natural disaster, or other unforeseen circumstance that would negatively impact their ability to continue their education.  The Fund has been endowed since creation and awards are expected to be made as early as 2019.
