Lesli Hall needed help.

As a first-generation college student, she didn’t know exactly how to navigate the world of higher education as a freshman at UK. But through the help of family and advisors, she found her way, and it led to a career.

Now she helps students every day. After 15 years advising undergraduate students at UK, she was hired in July as the College of Health Sciences’ newest academic advisor, where she can assist students and give back to the health community.

There was, at least, one thing Marie Belli was excited about as she walked to her first-ever college class Monday morning.

“I mean — I found it,” she said, laughing. “I’m here.”

Emily Martin could barely contain her excitement.

“I’m most excited about being in a new city with new opportunities,” said the 17-year-old from Smiths Grove, Ky. “All the while being able to further my education and get closer to having my dream job.”

Megan Kusmierz was ready.

On Monday, she finally moved in to her residence hall at UK, and the 18-year-old Human Health Sciences major (pre-med track) from Ocala, Fla., was already looking forward to the upcoming semester.
