This conference focuses on serving the needs of rural occupational therapists, physical therapists, and speech-language pathologists who desire increased competency in the provision of evidence based practice service delivery and increased understanding of cultural diversity issues for infants, toddlers and children with disabilities in early intervention or school-based settings.

Objectives

At the completion of the conference learners will:

1.                  Utilize evidence based practice in the selection of assessments for infants, toddlers, and children with disabilities in early intervention and schools.

2.                  Develop evidence based practice strategies for intervention based on assessment results for infants, toddlers, and children with disabilities in early intervention and schools.

3.                  Understand the role of occupational therapists, physical therapists, and speech-language pathologists in response to intervention and early intervening services in the school setting.

4.                  Learn how to search for evidence based practice information using publicly available databases and resources via the internet.

5.                  Describe strategies that will promote effective communication among professionals in a variety of teaming models.

6.                  Value the role of families in the provision of related services for infants, toddlers, and children with disabilities in early intervention and schools.

7.                  Discuss the impact of culture and language when planning and implementing services for infants, toddlers, and children with disabilities in early intervention and schools.

Speakers

Lynda Brown Wright, PhD, is an Associate Professor, Education, School and Counseling Psychology, College of Education at the University of Kentucky (UK). Her current areas of research interests include multicultural counseling and psychotherapy training models and their effect on the development of cultural sensitivity; psychosocial and familial influences on African American child development; determinants of academic achievement among minority children and youth; and psychosocial correlates of the development of cardiovascular disease risk in children and youth. Dr. Brown-Wright is a NIH Career Development Award recipient and was awarded the 2009 American Psychological Association Minority Fellowship Program's Dalmas Taylor Award for her outstanding contributions towards the development of ethnic minority psychologists.

Susan Effgen, PT, PhD, FAPTA, is a Professor in the Division of Physical Therapy at UK. She is a pediatric physical therapist and special educator and a project co-director. She recently completed a funded research project on the effectiveness of increased intensity of physical therapy intervention on the gross motor skill acquisition of young children with disabilities. She directed the development of the first set of early intervention and school-based competencies in physical therapy and was the principle investigator on an OSEP grant that supported the revision of these competencies for occupational therapy and physical therapy. She was national chairperson and founder of the APTA Section on Pediatrics, School-Based Special Interest Group.

Marqueleta ( Marti) Ginter,  MA, is the Coordinator for the Central Kentucky Special Education Cooperative and certified as a Director of Special Education Administration. She has extensive experience in special education due process, development/ implementation of professional development activities, group facilitation, and collaboration between general education and special education, as well as early childhood programming, and postsecondary transition programming. Ms. Ginter is a peer reviewer for Council of Exceptional Children publications and is a participant in various state level committees and workgroups, particularly the RtI Initiative and the School Based OT/PT Manual for Kentucky. In addition she is a participant in committees on IEP, Related Services Workgroups, and the KY Instructional Discipline Support Schools programs.

Jacqui Kearns, EdD, is the Director of the Inclusion Large Scale Standards and Assessments Center (ILSSA) at UK's Human Development Institute and the National Alternate Assessment Center (NAAC). These two centers research, develop and implement Alternate Assessments (AA) for multiple states across the US. Dr. Kearns is widely published in Alternate Assessment and is a recognized authority in the field. In addition, she currently collaborates in programs to address Kentucky’s Low Incidence Initiatives involving students with the most significant disabilities who have complex communication needs.

Jane Kleinert, PhD, CCC-SPL is an Assistant Professor in the UK Division of Communication Sciences and Disorders and is a project co-director.  Dr. Kleinert is an ASHA certified SLP and holds a lifetime KY Teaching Certificate in Communication Disorders. She has 30+ years of experience in service provision to infants, toddlers and children with disabilities. Dr. Kleinert has coordinated large early intervention/early childhood programs in urban and rural sites. She is the principle investigator for a grant from the KY Council on Developmental Disabilities designed to develop self-advocacy skills in school-aged students with significant developmental disabilities, is a consultant to the federally funded KY State Professional Development Grant Low Incidence Initiative, and coordinates the UK TEP Program in Communication Sciences and Disorders.

Christine Teeters Myers, PhD, OTR/L is an Assistant Professor in the Eastern Kentucky University (EKU), Department of Occupational Therapy and is a project co-director. She has an established line of research related to transition services for infants and toddlers and previously provided services to infants, toddlers, and preschoolers in a variety of hospital-based and community settings.  She is coordinator of the Transition to Preschool (ToPS) Program, a collaboration between Richmond Head Start, Madison County Preschools, and the Department of Occupational Therapy at EKU. She serves on the American Occupational Therapy Association Transition Task Group and was coordinator of the Department of Occupational Therapy Distance Education Graduate Program at the University of Florida prior to coming to Kentucky.
