How to setup Google Analytics

It is very important to know how people are using your site. One of the best ways to obtain site traffic statistics is to use Google Analytics.

What do I do?

1. Create a Google account.

Google Analytics is a service provided by Google, and you need an account with Google to use it. Most of you already have an account (through Gmail, Youtube, Blogger, or Google Buzz). If you already have an account, you don't need to create a new one for this task - you can use what you have. If you have never set up an account with Google, you will need to get one by following the instructions here: http://www.google.com/support/accounts/bin/answer.py?hl=en&answer=27441

2. Create a Google Analytics account

Just like you have to separately ask for a Blogger account or a Gmail account, you have to set up an Analytics account. The Google Account is just an umbrella - it is like entering through the front door, now you need keys to all the rooms that you want to use (Analytics is one of the rooms). Most of you don't have a Google Analytics account. You need to set one up following the instructions here and performing only Step 1: http://www.google.com/support/analytics/bin/answer.py?hl=en&answer=66983
When it asks for Website URL, use the address of your website.

3. Install a Google Analytics module on your practice site

The official page of this module on drupal.org is http://drupal.org/project/google_analytics The current version for Drupal 7 is 7.x-1.1: http://drupal.org/node/1053972
