Creating a User

  1. Create a new user named John Smith
    • It is important to use a valid address – allows the user to easily retrieve their password.
    • An e-mail address can only be used once – each user’s address must be unique.
    • After entering the email address make sure that profile information is saved.
  2. Add fields to the profile - The profile looks boring with no personal details, just the name and history. Profiles are similar to content types because they are made up of fields. These fields can be customized in the same way as fields found in the content types. During this step, fields such as – pictures and biography – will be added.
    • Picture
      • Pictures in profiles are usually on by default, but sometimes a custom image format works better because it allows users to control the size and look of the picture. We are going to create a custom image style and then apply that image style to a profile picture field.
      • To create a image style go to – Configuration > Image Styles > Click the ‘Add Style” link
        • A page will load that asks the user to enter the style name. c
          • Enter the name - “profile_picture”.
          • It is important to include hyphens, underscores, and lowercase letters because this name is used to generate url’s for images
          • Click “Create new style” after the name has been entered.
        • The next page allows the selection of the effect that will be used for the style. There are a few options, but for the profile picture the resize option is what we will use.
          • From the drop-down menu, chose “Resize”. Click add.
          • The next screen asks for the pixel size. Enter 200 for the width and 200 for the height. Click “Add effect”.
        • We now return to the original effects page. Click “Update style” to ensure that the style is updated with the new effects.
        • Press the home button to go back to the home screen.
      • A image field needs to be created to for the profile picture, and the style needs to be applied to the image field.
        • To create an image field go to - Configuration > Account Settings > Select the tab “Manage Fields” > Scroll down to “Add New Field” > Add the label “Profile Picture” > Add the field name “profile_picture” > Under the field column choose “Image” from the drop down menu > Click Save
        • The next page asks for field settings, these settings can be ignored for right now because a default picture is not needed. Just make sure to save the settings.
        • Return back to the Account settings page and click the “Manage Display” tab. Beside Profile Picture under the format column, click the button that looks like a little star.
        • Additional format settings appear. Under the image style drop down menu select the profile picture style that was previously created and click "Update". Your settings should look like the photo below. br>
        • Click save.
      • Now the profile picture can be added to do this go to – People > Select edit under the operations column beside the username > Scroll down and click browse under Picture > Select photo that you want to upload > Click OK
      • After the picture has been uploaded, make sure to click save.
      • Go to user profile to see the changes that have been made.
    • Biography – this field will hold text for a short, personal biography.
      • To add the Biography field to the profile go to – Configuration > Account Settings > Select the tab “Manage Fields” > Scroll down to “Add New Field” > Added the label “Biography” > Add the field name “profile_bio” > Click the drop down list titled “Select an existing field” > Select the field titled “Long Text”
      • Under the Widget column, there is usually only one option. There is no need to change it. Make sure to click save.
      • The user settings will now appear. Make sure to give the user some help text because it can help guide the user through the process. Ex: "Please enter your information here"
      • As we set up the field, we are asked by the system to set the size of the textfield – the size of the textfield does not refer to the amount of information that can be stored in the database but rather the size of the box on the screen in the GUI when the user is creating content. The fields on this setting can be left as they are. They can always be adjusted at a later time, if needed. Make sure to click save.
      • Go to user profile and enter some text into the field to see the changes.
