Military Honor Cords

In addition to the traditional cap and gown regalia worn at Commencement, undergraduate students are entitled to wear honor cords and stoles to signify achievement through college organizations or association with groups or programs. The UK Bookstore offers various sashes and cords for purchase, including academic honor cords. If your organization's cord/sash is not offered in the UK Bookstore, please reach out to your organization for information.

 

Military Honor Cords

In recognition of their military service, the University of Kentucky honors its service members by providing the military honor cords free of charge. Military honor cords can be found at the Veterans Resource Center located in Erikson Hall or the Commencement Office located in the Gatton Student Center Administrative Office Suite. 

  • Red, white, and blue cords indicate military service.

Academic Honor Cords

Academic honor cords can be purchased in the UK Bookstore. Students who have received graduation honors or who are eligible to receive graduation honors will be listed in the Commencement Program. The current cumulative GPA is used to determine the student's eligibility. However, the final decision will be based on the final cumulative GPA after all grades have been recorded. The following criteria is used to determine an undergraduate's eligibility to receive graduation honors. If you have questions please speak with your advisor. ​

  • Double gold honor cords signify academic honors of summa cum laude.

    • Students who attain a grade point average of 3.8 or higher for at least three years of work (90 hours) at the University of Kentucky (excepting correspondence study) shall be graduated "summa cum laude"

  • White and gold honor cords signify academic honors of magna cum laude.

    • Students who attain a grade point average of 3.6 to 3.799 for at least three years of work (90 hours) at the University of Kentucky (excepting correspondence study) shall be graduated "magna cum laude"

  • Double white honor cords signify academic honors of cum laude. 

    • Students who attain a grade point average of 3.4 to 3.599 for at least three years of work (90 hours) at the University of Kentucky (excepting correspondence study) shall be graduated "cum laude"

Students with a minimum of two but less than three years of work (60-89 hours) at the University of Kentucky shall receive the appropriate commencement honors if they attain a grade point average of 0.2 greater than above. The Graduate School does not award graduation honors. Some professional programs do award honors; speak with your dean's office regarding criteria used to determine eligibility. 

 

Additional Honor Cords:

  • White sashes indicate the wearer is a student athlete.

  • Black, blue, and white cords indicate membership in Omicron Delta Kappa National Leadership Honor Society.

  • Gold and blue sashes indicate wearer is a graduate of the Lewis Honors College.

  • Green and Red sashes indicate the wearer is a Gaines Scholar.

  • Purple and white sashes indicate the wearer is an Otis A. Singletary Scholar. 

  • Silver cords indicate the wearer is a UK Alumni Ambassador

Please note that all cords and sashes, with the exception of military honor cords, are only worn by undergraduate students.
