What is ConnectEd?

ConnectEd: A Randomized Controlled Trial Connecting through Educational Training  is a research study at the University of Kentucky funded by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). The study’s purpose is to identify the most effective training for incoming UK students to reduce violence and substance abuse.

Do I have to participate in ConnnectEd?

ConnectEd is completely voluntary. Study participation includes a training element.

Why should I participate in ConnectEd?

If you choose to participate in ConnectEd, you will be one of the first students to do so. Your participation will help campus decision-makers determine which training aspects lead to a safer University of Kentucky campus for everyone to enjoy.

In addition, you will also receive a free meal and a $40 American Express gift card as compensation for your time. UK Plus account dollars will be provided to you if you complete follow up surveys and microsurveys sent to you by smartphone or email.

How can I participate in this study?

This study is ONLY for incoming UK undergraduates. You have to be between the ages of 17-24 years old.

To participate, please complete the interest form here: bit.ly/ukyconnect When the initial survey becomes available, you will be notified at the email addresses you provided and you will then be notified of your respective training time.

Where can I find the initial survey?

Initial survey invitations will be released this summer for completion. These surveys will be sent directly to your UKY email address at your.name@uky.edu, linkblue@g.uky.edu or linkblue@l.uky.edu and to any additional personal email addresses that you provided. This link is unique to you and should not be shared with others. If upon checking your email you have not yet received an invitation from us, email us at connect_ed@uky.edu for assistance.

When are the training dates for ConnectEd?

Training dates and locations will be sent directly to your email. You will only be able to attend the training to which you were assigned in order to receive your $40 American Express gift card.

How do I sign up for training?

To sign up for training you first have to complete the initial survey, then you will be contacted at a later date about your training date, time and location on campus.

What is my involvement if I agree to participate?

If you agree to participate and complete this first brief survey, you will be randomly assigned to participate in one of two different 90 minute training programs.  While you will only be assigned to one training session, the different trainings focus on substance abuse and/or violence prevention and are conducted in-person.  All trainings will take place on UK's campus.

In the Fall and Spring semesters, you will receive an invitation to complete two short, follow-up surveys (takes about 5-10 minutes). These surveys will ask about experiences that you may have encountered while at college. Throughout the academic year, you will also receive push notifications to answer questions on your smartphone via text or MyUK App.
