Need & Impact

According to the US Bureau of Labor Statistics, the agriculture/forestry/fishing (AFF) industries experience the highest rates of work-related fatalities in the United States--24.9 fatalities per 100,000 workers per year (USDOL-CFOI, 2014), as well as high rates of nonfatal injuries--15.5 per 100,000 workers per year (BLS, 2014).

Few institutions in the United States offer graduate programs that educate safety and health professionals and others about agricultural occupational safety health or place agricultural safety and health in a public health context. The CARERC training program in Agricultural Safety and Health (ASH) spans the full spectrum of graduate education in public health, preparing trainees to succeed as part of trans-disciplinary teams.
