CARERC’s Continuing Education program is designed to increase opportunities for employees and employers in Central Appalachia to receive relevant occupational safety and health (OSH) education and training.
Toward this end, CARERC was pleased to host its first Central Appalachian Regional Work Safety & Health Symposium: An Interdisciplinary Update on Miner Safety and Health on August 22, 2013. This cross-disciplinary forum was held in conjunction with the 74th Annual Meeting of the Kentucky Mining Institute. Topics of discussion included the recent science indicating the risk for respiratory diseases among coal miners; state of the art tools and techniques for measuring coal dust; the current status for exposure limits, and the need for periodic health surveillance of coal workers.
CARERC has established a relationship with the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) Training Institute (OSHA TI) at Eastern Kentucky University. EKU’s OSHA Training Institute Education Center (OSHA TI EC) serves stakeholders in Federal Region IV, which includes Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina, and Tennessee. The Center draws upon a total of 17 instructors with more than 250 years of industry experience and offers 29 regular courses, examination preparation for the Certified Safety and Health Manager (CSHM), and an OSH Certificate Program for Correctional Safety Officers. The OSHA TI has agreed to work with us in the design of interdisciplinary versions of standard OSHA TI OSH courses that can be additionally accredited with CME and CNE credits. A small sub-contract from the CARERC to OSHA TI enables students at the University of Kentucky the opportunity to enroll in any of the OSHA training courses for a minimal base fee.
Doctoral students mentored by Dr. Debra Anderson in the Occupational and Environmental Health Nursing (OEHN) program have developed an online CE course for occupational and environmental health nurses that also has relevant content for Ag Health nurses.
