Campus Race to Zero Waste

Starting January 29th, the University of Kentucky will be joining the Campus Race to Zero Waste (formerly RecycleMania).

This is a yearly, nation-wide competition from January 29th through March 25th comparing campus recycling and waste diversion efforts from colleges and universities throughout the country.

The University of Kentucky has participated in this competition for 8 years in a row as an effort to encourage faculty, staff, and students to decrease their landfill waste across campus. During 2022’s Campus Race to Zero Waste, the university recycled a total of 143 tons, and with UK Recycling having expanded what’s accepted in campus’ blue, mixed recycling stream, the university hopes to far surpass this number.

In order to win the race, though, University of Kentucky needs YOUR help! Here’s some easy tips on how you can help us win the 2023 Campus Race to Zero Waste:

  • Know what’s recyclable in the blue, mixed recycling containers.
  • Recycle your pizza boxes in the blue, pizza box containers in every residence hall lobby.
  • Reduce the amount of Styrofoam and plastic utensils you use in your day-to-day life.
  • Spread the word! Encourage a friend or colleague to join the challenge.
  • Not sure if an item is recyclable at UK? Check out our IDK Bin!

Competition updates and results will be shared through our social media platforms.
