Be clear

Being clear with your team is always important. When your entire team is working remotely, clear communications are essential.

  • Don’t leave remote workers trying to read your mind.
  • Sharing detailed descriptions of what’s expected is much better for staff working remotely.
  • Distance amplifies uncertainty, and it is the role of the remote supervisor to provide a sense of structure through clear roles and responsibilities, precise objectives and performance measures.
  • Determine what the preferred group communication and collaboration tools will be and make sure all members have access and know how to use them.
  • Determine how frequently you as a supervisor/manager will connect with your team members.
  • Create ways by which remote workers can monitor their own performance and not always have to wait for your feedback.
Refresh your expectations

Moving away from traditional office spaces also means moving away from traditional management practices. Consider what expectations of yourself and your team you have that might need to change related to:

  • Schedules and availability
  • Technology and equipment
  • Meetings and attending trainings
  • Confidentiality and liability
  • Projects and tasks
  • Collaboration
  • Progress reports
  • Deadlines
  • Onsite visits
  • Performance reviews
