Stay Connected when Visiting other Institutions

University of Kentucky students, staff and faculty can now connect on UK’s campus and at over 200 other institutions with their link blue credentials with a global wireless network service called Eduroam (shortened from education roaming). Thus, individuals receive immediate access on any WiFi-enabled computer, smart phone or other device when visiting other campuses with Eduroam without requesting a guest account.

This benefits faculty visiting labs, individuals traveling to conferences, students studying aboard, visitors attending sporting events and others traveling to Eduroam enabled campuses.

Eduroam originated in Europe with over 2000 universities before expanding to the US in 2012. Eduroam is coordinated by TERENA (Trans-European Research and Education Networking Association), and participating National Research and Education Networks (NRENs) such as Internet2 in the US. Internet2 provides a bridge service for authenticating digital certificates which allow users access at any Eduroam location through the home institution’s credentials. In addition to higher education instructions, Internet2 hopes to expand Eduroam to elementary and high school systems, public libraries and other community organizations to provide trusted roaming environments for all students in the future.
