Lynn Kelso receives UKHC-UKCON Academic-Clinical Engagement Award

As part of UK HealthCare's annual nursing awards, the University of Kentucky College of Nursing's Lynn Kelso, MSN, APRN, FCCM, FAANP, was awarded the 2020 UKHC-UKCON Academic-Clinical Engagement Award.  The award is given each year to a nurse who demonstrates the impact of providing services that promote the UK HealthCare and UK College of Nursing mission of an authentic and integrated academic-clinical partnership.

"As one of the first Acute Care Nurse Practitioners in the country and a 20-year faculty member at the College of Nursing, Lynn Kelso has been "walking the talk" for years as a leader in acute patient care and instruction," said Dr. Janie Heath, Dean and Warwick Professor of Nursing at UKCON. "This year she's also been fighting COVID-19 on the frontlines, applying her expertise in Pulmonary ICU patient care. Her hard work and commitment are immeasurable and we're proud she's a part of the Big Blue Nursing Nation! Congratulations Lynn on this well-deserved UK HealthCare honor!"

Dr. Kelso was recognized for her exemplary experience and expertise in many areas:

  • For the last 10 years, Dr. Kelso has delivered advanced nursing care to Pulmonary ICU patients. She collaborates with the critical care nursing staff to address both basic and complex patient health concerns while managing the combined nursing and medical aspects of patient care. In addition to providing a holistic nursing approach to patient care, her practice includes the delivery of procedural interventions such as central line placement, tracheal intubation, lumbar puncture, arterial line placement, thoracentesis, and paracentesis to promote patient health.
  • Dr. Kelso is a nationally-recognized expert in the treatment of sepsis, multi-drug resistant organisms, and acute liver failure. 
  • Dr. Kelso leads an annual Progressive Care Certification course in which staff nurses prepare for AACN certification in the specialty. This CE offering is highly rated by UKHC staff nurses and has received acknowledgment as a high-quality opportunity for nursing knowledge advancement by UKHC's Professional Development Council.
  • Dr. Kelso leads a certification course for nurse practitioners, physician assistants, and new residents on how to perform central line placement.
