UK Nursing's Dr. Williams receives Fred and Marcielle de Beer Award for impactful diabetes research

Congratulations to the University of Kentucky College of Nursing’s Lovoria Williams PhD, FNP-C, FAANP, FAAN for receiving the 2021 Fred and Marcielle de Beer Award from the UK Barnstable Brown Diabetes Center.  

The Fred and Marcielle de Beer Award recognizes faculty for excellence in research, education, clinical care or leadership activities related to diabetes.

Dr. Wlliams is a tenured associate professor in the UK College of Nursing, where she also directs the Community Health Advocacy iNterventions Generating Equity (CHANGE) research team.  The group is dedicated to the advancement of health equity among racial/ethnic minorities and medically underserved populations through the implementation of service and collaborative community-engaged research interventions and policy changes. Dr. Williams also serves as the assistant director for cancer health equity at the NCI-designated Markey Cancer Center.

 Dr. Williams’ research has been primarily focused on advancing health equity for underserved populations through community engaged research methods to improve diabetes outcomes.  In her career, she has been the primary investigator or co-investigator on seven extramurally funded grants focused on intervention development for diabetes prevention.

Currently, Dr. Williams serves as the primary investigator for of a five-year R01 grant funded by the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases called the “The Fit & Faithful Project.”  This grant extends her previous successful intervention work focused on diabetes prevention through exercise and weight management conducted in collaboration with African American churches by introducing targeted supplemental support to those individuals that do not respond optimally to the primary intervention, thereby enhancing the overall community-level impact of the program.
