Title: Leveraging medical-legal partnerships to enhance interdisciplinary, team-based approaches to facilitate effective cost of care conversations
Lead investigator: Dr. Jean Edward
Research team: CHANGE
Project Period: March 1, 2020 to February 27, 2022
Total Award: $399,268
Sponsor: Robert Wood Johnson Foundation
Dr. Edward and her interdisciplinary team were funded by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation to develop and evaluate FINassist© (Financial and Insurance Navigation Assistance). This program is a patient-centered, interdisciplinary team-based approach that encourages oncologists, social workers, financial counselors, and patient legal advocates (lawyers) to work in together to help patients and their families with addressing their health, financial, social and legal needs.
This project is being implemented in UK’s DanceBlue Pediatric Hematology and Oncology clinic at Kentucky Children’s Hospital where we serve a large rural and Appalachian population. We believe this program will help encourage conversations around healthcare costs, financial and social needs between providers and patients and families with childhood cancers and hematologic disorders. Another anticipated outcome of the program is providing patients and their families with financial assistance and help with addressing any social needs they may have ranging from transportation and housing issues to help with navigating the health insurance system. This program is also designed to advocate for system-level changes to address health, financial, social and legal needs of underserved patients and families with childhood cancers across Kentucky.
