Fit Academy: Learn. Certify. Work. Have Fun.

Are you a Fitness minded individual that wants to LEARN how to become a Fitness Professional, get CERTIFIED, WORK making good money, and HAVE FUN helping others reach their full potential?  

If so, FIT Academy is for you!!  In collaboration with the National Exercise Trainers Association (NETA) the Department of Campus Recreation is proud to offer it's retooled  Fitness Instructor and Trainer preparation/certification course.

Now you can prepare, get certified, and once certified we will give you a job!

 

Spring 2023 Fit Academy Dates Will Be Announced by December 15th 

Certified Personal Trainer 

Fit Academy- Personal Training is based upon NETA's Personal Training Curriculum for preparation for the certification.  Participants will also gain hands on experience through working with Certified Fitness Professionals during the program.     

  • Information Session: One Hour information event highlighting the benefits and requirements for the Fit Academy program. 
  • Preparation Course-Course taught by Fitness Department Leadership, Instructors and Trainers, designed to educate students in the foundational knowledge of a Personal Trainer
  • Study & Practice-  Study for the NETA exam and gain hands on experience in learning the craft of a Personal Trainer!
  • Certification Weekend or Online Certification Exam-  Attend the NETA Review Workshop/ Certification Weekend  or take NETA Exam through On-Line Certification process  

 

Certified Group Fitness Instructor

Fit Academy is based upon NETA's Group Exercise Instructor curriculum for preparation for the certification.  Participants will also gain real life experience in working with Certified Fitness Professionals during the program.  

  • Information Session: One Hour information event highlighting the benefits and requirements for the Fit Academy program. 
  • Preparation Course-  Course taught by Fitness Department Leadership, Instructors and Trainers, designed to educate students in the foundational knowledge of a Group Fitness Instructor
  • Study & Practice - Study for the NETA exam and gain hands on experience in learning the craft of a Group Fitness Instructor!
  • Certification Weekend or Online Certification Exam-  Attend the NETA Review Workshop/ Certification Weekend  or take NETA Exam through On-Line Certification process  

 

Cost

All participants that are accepted into the Fit Academy Program will be required to pay $75 for  all needed study materials and an American Red Cross Adult CPR/AED/First Aid certification which is a prerequisite for the NETA Certification.   Participants that fulfill all components of the education portion of Fit Academy will be provided a slot in the final NETA Certification Class the weekend of October 30th.  

 

How It Works

  • Apply for Program - Link will be sent out to all attendees at information session or those that meet the qualifications for the program
  • Prospective candidates will interview and conduct a Fitness Demonstration session with Fitness Leadership team 
  • Once selected participant will register for the course and then attend  preparation courses for the official NETA Certification Weekend 
  • Work with Certified Fitness Instructor/Trainer to develop hands on skills related to position (shadow training sessions/ team teaching fitness classes) 
  • Study and prepare for NETA certification 
  • Successfully Pass NETA Certification Test during the final program weekend and pass a final hands on skills evaluation, participant may be hired as a Level I- Certified Trainer/Instructor ($10 HR)
  • Begin to  teach Group Fitness Classes or conduct Personal Training Sessions (at $10 HR)  and within an academic semester you will be reevaluated for advancement to a  Level II -Certified Trainer/Instructor ($20 HR) 

 

Eligibility 

This program is only open to University of Kentucky Students 

 

Application Process 

1.  Complete the Fit Academy Application and conduct Interview/Skills Demonstration with Fitness Leadership team. 

2.  Individuals selected will be agree to: 

  • Attend Prep Course for specific area of interest (Personal Training or Group Fitness)
  • Complete all education components that include mock training sessions, fitness assessment and program design clinics
  • Commit and prepare for certification during fall semester
  • Take part in Mentor/Shadow process of Certified Fitness Staff during fall semester
  • Attend the NETA Workshop & Certification for specific area of Interest  (if applicable) 
  • Upon successful Certification participant will  work for program for one year as Certified Trainer/ Instructor (Level I - at least 10 sessions, $10 HR,  Level II - $20 HR)
