K Week FAQs
Why should I attend K Week?
K Week is the second step in the orientation process and the best way to get started at UK. Everything is designed to help your transition to college be a smooth one. There are more than 100 events that take place during K Week, so we are confident you will find something that interests you! K Week is one of the biggest traditions on campus, and we encourage you to take full advantage of it. You get out what you put in, so be confident and take that first step!
Is K Week mandatory?
All new students are expected to attend K Week, and attendance will be taken at major K Week events, including K Team meetings, the New Student Induction Ceremony, and college meetings. Students are strongly encouraged to attend other K Week events of interest to them.
What if I need to miss part of K Week?
We understand that some students may have other obligations during K Week, but coming to college is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. We strongly encourage you to participate fully in K Week, as this is the opportunity to make your new home at UK, meet people you will be living with, make new friends, and get started on the right foot. Attendance will be taken at K Team meetings, New Student Induction Ceremony, and college meetings.
How has COVID-19 impacted K Week?
The health and safety of our campus community is our top priority in all we do, including making plans for K Week 2020. Out of an abundance of caution, some major K Week events will not be able to be offered in person due to space and gathering size restrictions. However, there will still be options for some in-person events such as K Team meetings and Campus Ruckus. For those who are not comfortable with in-person gatherings or who will not yet be in Lexington due to changes to the academic calendar, virtual participation in K Week is an option. We want you to have the best K Week experience possible given the circumstances. If you have any questions or concerns about your K Week participation, please email us at KWeek@lsv.uky.edu.
Where do I park during K Week?
During K Week, free parking is available on campus in K Lot at Kroger Field and in the Cornerstone Garage on South Limestone (PS #5). Beginning Monday, August 17, all University parking lots return to normal permit control and all vehicles must be parked in their assigned areas and properly display the appropriate valid UK parking permit.
On-campus bus transportation will be available this fall - starting on August 12th - on the Blue Route, which can be tracked using the TransLoc app (uky.transloc.com).
Transportation Services is open weekdays from 7:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. and will have extended Saturday hours from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on August 1, 8, and 15. The customer service center will also be open from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Sunday, August 16. For the first week of classes, the office will be open from 7:30. a.m. to 7:30 p.m. Monday, August 17, through Friday, August 21.
If you have questions or need more information, please call 859-257-5757 or email UK Transportation Services. Follow them on Twitter @UKParking. For more information on parking and transportation on campus, visit www.uky.edu/transportation.
When do I move in?
Check out the Housing and Residence Life website for more information related to your residence hall.
What is a K Team?
We know from experience that coming to college can be overwhelming as you are meeting new people and finding your way around campus. To help ease the transition, we have recruited more than 240 of UK’s best student leaders to assist you with your first semester on campus. These students are members of K Crew, and they will be helping you and the other new students on your K Team, a group of 15 - 25 new students, throughout your first semester on campus. You will attend several K Week events with your K Team, so don’t worry about going to events alone or finding your way around by yourself.
What if I don't feel comfortable meeting with a K Team in person due to the situation with COVID-19?
In response to COVID-19, a fully virtual K Team experience is an option for students to consider if they cannot attend in person or do not feel comfortable gathering in small groups of 25. To opt in to a fully virtual K Team, please complete this online form by Wednesday, August 5th. Virtual participation in K Week is a valuable way to acclimate to the UK community and is encouraged for all those who wish to join in without being part of an in-person group. Even if you did not complete the online request form before it closed, you can still participate in a virtual K Team on Thursday, August 13, at 7 p.m. EDT. If you live on campus in a UK residence hall, the Zoom link for the meeting is https://uky.zoom.us/j/93776192296. If you live off campus, check the K Week app for your off-campus zip code to find your Zoom link for the Thursday K Team meeting.
I’m a new student living on campus. How do I find my K Team?
K Teams are assigned in August and announced a few days before K Week begins. You will be able to find your K Team number by downloading the K Week mobile app and searching for your residence hall room number.
I’m a new student living off campus. How do I find my K Team?
Off-campus students are assigned to K Teams specific to their zip code. This is designed to help you meet people where you live! Students can find their K Team assignment in the K Week mobile app.
How do I find out who my K Crew leader is?
Download the K Week mobile app for more information about your K Crew leader. If you live on campus, search by your residence hall. If you live off campus, search by your off-campus location. K Crew leaders’ contact information is listed should you need to contact them!
What should I wear to K Week?
Kentucky’s August weather can be unpredictable! We encourage dressing for hot weather. Events take place all over campus, so comfortable walking shoes are a must. Events will take place rain or shine, so check the forecast and be prepared. We’ll have fun no matter what!
If I change residence hall rooms right before K Week, will my K Team change?
Maybe. K Team assignments for on-campus residents are made based on your residence hall and room number. Find your residence hall and room number on the K Week mobile app to confirm your K Team.
Is there a chance that my K Team number will change after K Week has started?
Possibly. If a K Crew leader is sick or we have to combine K Teams, it is possible that your K Team number will change. Whatever the situation, we ask that students be patient and trust that we are working hard to make their first week at UK as easy as possible. We will notify new students of any K Team changes via their UK email.
Can I change K Teams to be with my friend from home?
While we want all new students to feel at home at UK, we ask that students stick with their assigned K Teams. K Teams are designed to create opportunities for new students to meet new people and create connections in the community in which they will be living.
UK is a big campus! How do I find my way around?
We recognize that UK is a large campus and it is sometimes difficult to find your way around. Your K Crew leader is a great resource for help mapping out a plan to get to your classes. If you are in need of a campus map, check out maps.uky.edu/campusmap or download the myUK mobile app to view a map on the go.
Can parents and families participate in K Week?
In an effort to keep our UK community safe, we will not be hosting in-person K Week family events this year. However, we will be offering virtual events for our new UK families, including the New Student Induction Ceremony. Click here for more information on ways to support your new UK student before, during, and after K Week.
Can BCTC students living in UK residence halls participate in K Week?
BCTC students living in UK halls are welcome to attend K Week social events like Campus Ruckus. BCTC students with additional questions can email KWeek@lsv.uky.edu.
