Learn About Alternative Transportation During K Week

New to campus and need some help getting around? Parking and Transportation Services (PTS) and Wildcat Wheels Bicycle Library are helping students get acquainted with navigating the University of Kentucky by bike, bus and car through several K Week events.

On Sunday, August 23 join PTS and the Bicycle Advisory Committee for Pedalpalooza from 4:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. in the South Campus Courtyard for the chance to win an iPad Mini. Students are invited to enjoy free bicycle-powered smoothies and watch as nine-time National Champion stunt rider Mike Steidley demonstrates his riding skills. Students attending this event can pick up free gear designed to improve the comfort and safety of their bicycling experience, such as bicycle seat covers and water bottles. Attendees may participate in skills challenges, giving them the chance to develop their bicycle knowledge and expertise in tasks like properly locking a bicycle, loading a bike on a bus and reviewing hand signals. Students with current Wildcard IDs who complete at least four of the six skills challenges will be entered to win an iPad Mini.

PTS is also offering an informational session on getting around campus during K Week 2015. “Getting Around Campus and Beyond” will be held on Saturday, August 22 at 2 p.m., 102 White Hall Classroom Building. A UK Parking and Transportation Services representative will talk about all the ways to get to and around campus and Lexington. Many students find that it’s just as quick, easy and convenient to get around by using the alternative transportation resources that the University and city offer. You’ll also learn about parking basics and have a chance to ask questions about navigating your new home.

Wildcat Wheels Bicycle Library, the nationally-recognized educational resource that provides free bicycle use and repair assistance to the UK community, will also offer three K Week sessions. The Wildcat Wheels Bicycle Library is funded by Parking and Transportation Services and supervised by the Office of Sustainability.

  • August 25, 5 – 7 p.m. – Bicycle-Friendly Lexington Bike Tour: Wildcat Wheels' League Cycling Instructors-certified staff will lead students on a tour of some of Lexington's bike-friendly hot spots.
  • August 26, 3 – 4 p.m. – Understanding Lexington’s Bicycle Facilities: Learn about Lexington and UK's bicycle facilities, how and when to use them, and the best ways to get around the streets of Lexington by bicycle.
