Upcoming Traffic Changes on Bolivar Street

By lasu224 · March 12, 2020

Bolivar Street will be one way from Plunkett Street toward Oliver Lewis Way and South Broadway from March 23-27 to facilitate sanitary sewer work. Commuters traveling from Oliver Lewis Way and South Broadway can use Cedar Street as a detour to South Upper Street.

Lexington has started the tough task of replacing two miles of sanitary sewer line between Oliver Lewis Way and Tates Creek Road. This work is the first phase of Lexington’s multi-year project to replace two miles of sanitary sewer line from Oliver Lewis Way to Tates Creek Road, through the University of Kentucky campus and the Euclid business district. Construction on the Euclid sewer project began several weeks ago.

Several other significant traffic changes have gone into effect or will occur over the next few months:

  • The intersection of South Upper and Winslow Streets will be closed from 7 p.m. Friday, March 13, to 6 a.m. Monday, March 16, 2020, weather permitting. Area businesses will remain open during this closure.
  • Avenue of Champions is currently one way toward South Limestone and will remain so until fall 2020. Commuters traveling from South Limestone should use East Maxwell Street as a detour. Sidewalks on both sides of Avenue of Champions are open. To cross Avenue of Champions, pedestrians should use the crosswalks at South Limestone and Lexington Avenue.
  • The intersection of Chair Avenue and Scott Street is closed from March 9 to 17, 2020. Area businesses remain accessible during this closure.

Drivers are encouraged to slow down and be attentive of pedestrians and cyclists, especially in construction areas.

The sewer project is also impacting UK’s bus routes: The campus Blue (14) and Yellow (27) Routes are impacted during work on Avenue of Champions. Blue Route buses, which travel on South Limestone and typically turn right onto Avenue of Champions will instead be diverted to Vine Street, bypassing Avenue of Champions entirely. The buses will turn right onto Vine and right onto Rose Street. Weekend Yellow Route buses will also detour to Vine Street and travel right onto Rose Street. View a map here.

Bus stops on Avenue of Champions near the Gatton Student Center will be unavailable during this work. Students are encouraged to use the existing bus stop near Jewell Hall as an alternative to the ones on Avenue of Champions. In addition, temporary bus stops will be added near Holmes Hall on South Limestone and near the Singletary Center for the Arts on Rose Street.

Commuters who use Lextran’s Red Mile Route (Route 15) may also experience detours.

Lexington residents, commuters and visitors are encouraged to visit LexingtonKY.gov/EuclidSewer for traffic information and updates about the project.
