SSL Certificates Available

University of Kentucky Information Technology (UKIT) has partnered with the InCommon® Certificate Service to provide (at no cost), unlimited Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) certificates signed by certificate authority Comodo. This new certificate service is now available to all UK departments and affiliates and replaces the Thawte certificates previously issued.

An SSL Certificate (also called a Digital Certificate), creates a secure link between a website and a visitor's browser. By ensuring that all data passed between the two remains private and secure, SSL encryption prevents hackers from stealing private information such as credit card numbers, names and addresses.

By providing SSL/TLS certificates at no cost to individual UK units, this service will help reduce IT operational costs and encourage UK Colleges and Departments to use certificates signed by a legitimate certificate authority, rather than using self-signed certificates that are vulnerable to Man-in-the-Middle (MITM) cyber security attacks.

To request a SSL certificate, a Department Administrator or IT representative from each department/unit should contact security@uky.edu to establish a profile in the InCommon® Certificate Manager portal. The request will then be reviewed by UKIT Security personnel, and additional information may be requested or collected. The review process can take up to 24 hours. However, once a department/unit is defined to the InCommon® Certificate Manager, it can request, receive and install SSL certificates as desired for the department/unit.
